So my Fiance decided he wanted to feel like a kid today, so he made tunamac (tuna+macaroni and cheese). I cannot convey how strongly I hate the smell of tuna fish.  Anyways, I'd been laying/closed off in my room and got up to see what was going on--sure enough, nastiness permeated the air.  I asked my Fiance, "What did you make? Please tell me didn't make tunamac! Weren't you going to make bean enchiladas!?" His response, "I was hungry.."

If he was good about covering up the stench it wouldn't bother me--like cleaning the sink and disposal right after making it like my sister and aunts used to do growing up.  The worst part is he gave the cats the can, and they licked it and now they're busily grooming themselves, spreading that nastiness on their coats.  Even my oldest cat who doesn't like tuna got a lick of it and now she's smelly, too.

Oh well, this is more a playful vent.

Since I noted a really fun post about what your favorite smells are last week, my question is:  What smells do you hate?!

EDIT:  He just tried to kiss me, I gave him the yuck face.

I hate the smell of tuna too! But I'm very easily grossed out by smells

    • any sort of left over food
    • catsup
    • ground beef cooking
    • going into someone's house and it smelling like animals
    • rotten milk (i work at Starbucks)

@SweetRose2011:  Yeah, I'm not a fan of the smell of people's homes w/ animals.  It's more of an issue with animals that go outside and people that don't change cat litter frequently enough.  Is catsup b/c of the vinegar in it?  I have to breath through my mouth when I clean my stainless steel pots and pans when I clean with vinegar (does a very good job keeping them shiny).

@beekiss2: Well I like the smell of vinegar. But I'm so seriously grossed out by catsup I won't touch the bottle. It's like a growing phobia. I won't even like eat anything with it if I know it's in there! And to think I used to eat it when I was a kid...

How weird am I? I'm more of a mustard girl.

    • Mayo
    • The meat dept of any market
    • Lavender scented anything
    • Eucalyptus scented things (I love fresh eucalyptus though)
    • B.O. (that's a given!)

@SweetRose2011:  I love mustard!  I even have a mustard seed necklace in reference to the parable.  Fiance supposedly hates mustard--sometimes I sneak it in and he doesn't notice.

@CaraMia10:  I hate Mayo, I hate most white viscous things (it's not really the smell that bothers me).  I also don't like ranch.  I take the bus to school/work and sometimes there's some BO there, definitely nasty.

@Applestar13:  I'm curious about popcorn, that's kind of interesting.  Sometimes the apartment doesn't smell good after I pop some, but I just assumed it was the microwave being dirty (I need to deep clean it).  Burnt popcorn doesn't smell good.

I associate popcorn with the smell of feet lol. I don't normally eat popcorn but my FI loves movie theaters and I hate them because they smell so bad to me. Almost like feet. I think it is the massive amount of butter smell they have there.

I opened this thinking I'm going to post I hate TUNA!!!  ;)  I once worked at a preschool where they believed in modelling eating different foods during the lunchtime and they served tuna.. the woman who supervised me made a comment about me not even putting it on my plate, and I let her know that I just didn't want to be sick!  Having it under my nose makes me nauseous! (I also had issues with the idea of wasting food that a child could eat...)

@JoJo Bananas:  Baby diapers and puke are something I'm not looking forward to when I have children; maybe I'll become immune?

    Cinnamon!

I don't mind eating it but I hate the smell.   Weird huh?  When I go into stores around Christmas and they have those cinnamon brooms out.. ugh!  Instant migraine!

I also react like that to most colognes.  I don't know if that's hating it or just a weird sensitivity...

I also hate licorice smell, and the smell of beef cooking.

@jjilyeah:  Subway does have a specific smell--not sure what they serve that makes it that way, maybe it's their bread?  Jimmie Johns is the same way!  Marijuana--lol!

@MsInterpret:  Licorice!  I used to have these thick scented markers and the black marker was black licorice--I didn't like it and rarely colored with it.  I love cinnamon but after the holidays, I'm finished with it for awhile.  Colognes can also give me migraines!

I just looked licroice up on wikipedia, it's supposedly toxic.  Here's something else interesting: "Comparative studies of pregnant women suggest that liquorice can also adversely affect both IQ and behaviour traits of offspring."

@beekiss2:  I remember markers like that!

Oh and I just thought of another one:  pizza parlor smells.  Any of them.  FI worked as a cook at Pizza Hut for 2.5 years.  She smelled yeasty/cheesy EVERY night and the smell never left her work clothes no matter how much they were washed. It was gross and I cannot stand that smell now at all, no matter what pizza place.

Same for fried chicken, which stems from working at KFC in high school. ;)

Just thought of two more:  pipe tobacco, and cigar smoke!  And even though he's dead and gone, every time I smell a cigar I instinctively turn and look around for my father! lol!

I also laughed at the marijuana comment.. but yeah, I grew up with a pothead brother and I agree!  It smells like stinky butt.

@MsInterpret:  In high school, I worked at Pizza Hut for a week and HATED it.  The clothes, the pants that I worked in, I threw out b/c I could not get the stench of that place out of them.  They even warned us about the smell.  Yeast doesn't smell too bad to me since Fiance makes a lot of artisan breads and has a sourdough starter, it was more their oils and whatever else they cooked with at Pizza Hut.  They also smoked indoors near the dough making station; needless to say, I no longer give them my service.  So I hear ya!

I kind of like the smell of pipe tobacco.  But cigarette and cigar smoke--no thanks!  I grew up with my dad and uncles smoking like freight trains, such a nasty habit and I actually believe it's negatively affected my respiratory system.  And marijuana, well my dad did that too, but not around my sister or me, I just remember a few times smelling it when I'd walk past the garage or shed.

@MsInterpret: How funny! FI also worked @ PH for about 6 months, and I would love the way he smelled...I like the smell of the dough, lol. But I can understand how that would gross some people out. I also HATE the smell of cigars, it grosses me out SO bad.

I hate the smell of green peppers cooking, but I also hate the taste of them so I guess that goes hand-in-hand.

I hate cinnamon as well, because I ate a whole box of Cinnamon Toast Crunch when I was little and then threw it up under our basement stairs (sorry, TMI).

@Ms Mini:  Aw, I actually like the smell of blueberries--a really small town in Indiana that was near mine used to host a blueberry festival every year right around today in fact, it was kind of fun.  It was better than the yearly fair!  I'm not much of a fan of blueberries unless I'm eating them with my frosted wheats!

@beekiss2:  Isn't it so funny how things are ruined for us forever?

I also don't like scallops anymore because my dad would cook a stir fry with scallops and green peppers that would stink the house up, and now those smells are intermingled with each other in my brain.

Cooking cauliflower or cabbage, and buttery microwave popcorn. Oddly enough, I don't really mind the smell of animal vomit (I'm a vet and have been exposed to this particular aroma quite a few times), but absolutely cannot deal with human vomit - seriously, I have to leave the room. I also cannot deal with curry, both in taste and smell. Related to the original post: I also make tunamac and think it's delicious, but my fiance is absolutely, positively revolted by it.

@Ms.Teddy: OH my goodness I love the smell of Cinnamon so much!!

I'm going to have to agree with a pp about the old lady perfume/bath wash. We have this lady that comes in sometimes and has such strong smelling perfume that she will be sitting ten feet away and I can still smell. Ugh can we say migraine inducing.

@redherring:  I read your post to my Fiance, he laughed to himself!  I'm used to animal vomit as well, my oldest cat (3 yrs) ocassionally has these attacks where whatever she eats/drinks makes her throw up.  I've cleaned up so much of her vomit.  My vet says her throat closes off and has asthma (she wheezes).  Also, she can't eat any wetfood including science diet or soft treats (it used to only apply to beef flavored items).

Aside from the obvious (puke, cat pee, rotten food, B.O.):

the smell of curry, in food or on people after they've eaten the food

the smell of olive oil being used to cook

    bleach

    cigarettes, cigars, weed
