I haven't done anything special for my current one, but my old one used to be this:
"You have reached the BPX-2000 Voice Blackmail System. Your voice patterns are now being digitally encoded and stored for later use. Once this is done, our computers will be able to use the sound of your voice for literally thousands of illegal and immoral purposes. There is no charge for this initial consultation. However our staff of professional extortionists will contact you in the near future to further explain the benefits of our service, and to arrange for your schedule of payment. Remember to speak clearly at the sound of the tone. Thank you."
@linguo42: Hahah that's funny (: our WiFi used to be called "FBI Surveillance Van".
Ours is the default message. Neither one of us cares to put a personal message.
We only have our cell phones but my message is:
"Hi, you've reached Cait. I can't get to my phone right now so leave a message and I'll call you back. Thanks."
Pretty simple.
@JoJo Bananas: Yeah we were thinking about just leaving it, but our number is close to a doctor's office near us and we don't want patients to get confused and leave messages on our system ;)
@UpstateCait: That's what we're leaning towards right now, short and sweet (: thanks!
I have this one on mine, but I am not sure if most people listen to it.
"You have reached "tksjewelry", please do not leave a message because I don't check them anyway. If you need to reach me send me a text or email. If this is an emergency, just keep calling back and I will eventually answer. Have a great day."
@sugarpea: We named ours Skynet. One day it will take over the world.
@linguo42: Hahah ours is called Pokémon Central. We called it that as a joke and now we can't figure out how to change it. The people in our building must think we're freaks ;)
@tksjewelry: Heh I like that. Except I actually hate when people just keep calling me over and over and won't leave a frigging message. If you're going to call me only during my work hours when I can't pick up and you won't leave a message, you will never reach me and all the missed call notifications will make me want to smash my phone.
"Hi, you've reached the cellphone of Aure Lastname. I'm unable to answer my phone right now. Please leave your name, number and the time of your call and I will get back to you as soon as possible. Thanks!"
@tksjewelry: We were thinking about mentioning texting or email in our message haha, some people I just don't feel like calling back ;)
@Aure: 'Time of your call' is a good idea (: I think ours says the time when we play the message back, but it would be a good backup if the power goes out and the time is reset.
"You have reached [our phone number]. We're unavailable to take your call right now but if you leave your name and number, we'll call you back as soon as possible. Thank you."
Brief and to the point. We never have anything cutesy on there since we like to remain professional in case our current/any future employers call.

Hi Bees! My SO and I got a new phone/answering machine set for Christmas and are just setting it up now that school holidays are over. We're really excited about recording our answering machine message but are at a complete loss. We don't want it to sound super boring but we don't want it to be too over-the-top ;)
This is kind of a weird question but what does your answering machine message say? If you don't have an answering machine, what would you want to record?
