hipmunk is a good place to look for the lowest prices.

where are you located? is it possible to drive? you could rent a car for much less than $600.

I wanted to travel in December to a place where I normally can get the round trip for something between $350-400, and this time the price was like $1100. And that was on a weekday and late at night. Not during Christmas week either. Ridiculous.

@peachacid:  I get price alerts through kayak. You can set it for “upcoming weekends” too. Got tickets to Costa Rica for $550 pp including taxes and fees. They were going for $750 pp.

@peachacid:  i often find the best flight deals are about 3 weeks prior to departure date.

@peachacid:  I lived in Vermont as a kid and went to college there. A cheap flight to Vermont doesn’t exist :|.

We’ve gotten used to paying too little for flights. with all the mergers lately (NW+ Delta, Southwest + AirTran, United+ Continental) there’s less competition and fewer fare wars. The airlines are making a profit for the first time since 9/11, some of them it’s the first time since deregulation. Get used to higher fares as the norm, and whenever you see a sale, grab it and don’t hesitate!

Unless a location is on a particular list where they are trying to fill seats, (and Vermont isn’t enough of a destination to really do that, as it is pretty out of the way) last minute deals aren’t really a thing. It usually just costs a ton more to fly last minute. Have you looked into nearby airports? Depending on what part of Vermont you want, Boston might be a good place to fly into, and it’s more likely that you could get last minute deals to that airport.
