What about the edible arrangements or a cookie bouquet?  It’s unexpected and could cost about the same as traditional flowers, but people don’t usually make choc covered strawberries or amazing cookies for themselves.  🙂

Jewelry? You could have mom/daughter pieces made or pick them out yourself?idk

I can never figure out what to get my mother either and her b-day is in a month too! I tend to always get her clothes because she likes to dress like a frumpy old lady and then complains that she looks frumpy. So I get her some cute, stylish, age appropriate clothes for a flippin 45 y.o. woman.

Would clothes or accessories be an option?

One time I bought my mom a milk bath … I don’t know if it was powdered or liquid … cannot remember – but she still talks about that milk bath. It was so long ago. Lol.

So every year I buy her a milk bath =) I also get her some kind of house thing … she loves these mixing bowls I got her from crate and barrel … just little stuff that she loves.

Once I found really cool measuring spoons at Anthropology and she really cherishes them!

My dad is the hardest. I don’t know why … he is the toughest out of anyone I’ve ever known my entire life!

He was on a book kick …and everyone started gifting him books and once he complained … haha … now nobody will ever give him a book again.

Is she a picture person?  Not sure if you have enough time, but maybe you could compile old photos and make one of those picture books (not a scrap book, but submit them online (like at snapfish) and have them make book out of it.

What’s the last gift she received that you remember her raving about?

What about a great spa robe (super soft/comfy).

Could you get her tickets to something she’d like going to (since she lives in the boonies, maybe to an event in the closest city?  or a dinner out a nice place that she can go to with your dad?)

What about a digital picture frame already filled up with some great photos of your family?

I have the same trouble with my parents. They buy themselves anything that they want… so what could I get them? That’s why I’ve mostly given up and I just get them “events.”

Maybe you could fly home to see her? She would probably like a weekend with you better than any gift you could buy her. Especially if it is a surprise you set up with your dad? I did that for my mom for mother’s day (told her I couldn’t come home then just showed up) and it went over HUGELY. 🙂

Do you have a wedding photo of just you and her that you could frame?  Perhaps that with a heartfelt letter of how much you appreciate her, etc.  Sometimes words are the best thing that someone can give.  Besides, who doesn’t like to hear how much they are loved/admired/appreciated.  Plus, she’ll have your words to read forever.
