I'm a NYC DW'er...I just deleted another voicemail about a bridal show since I've found the majority of my vendors already. Our DW will be in Punta Cana. We did our searching online and there was a really old post here about another DW bride in Cancun, and Best Destination Wedding forum. Both have been really helpful!
me, too. based on east end of Long Island, but getting married next month in the Caribbean. (The island of Nevis.) We chose it because we've always wanted to go there.... it's very untourist-y, interesting historic sites, etc. The thing about a DW is that you really don't need any vendors, per se, unless you bring a photog along with you. In general, someone on the island is making those choices; or a hotel is doing most everything. i mean, the food, the drink, the music, the flowers, the officiant -- in my case it's all being set up by the historic "plantation inn" where we're staying.
did i still go totally hog-wild bridal-obsessed? yes, i did. i focused on things that i could still choose myself: invitations; clothing and accessories for me, the groom, the flower girls; etc etc.
awesome thanks all! I was thinking about organizing a DW bridal meetup - i have a few friends who had a DW and I would love to see their pics and hear their experiences over cocktails or a weekend brunch - something by DW brides for brides.
are you guys bringing your own photog? and/or videographer?
@sleepylittlesailor - I am planning to have a DW in Marriott St Kitts, near Nevis. I want to find florist and photographer not through the Resort (which will probably charge me an arm and a leg). Did you just go with Plantation Inn on everything? We are just starting so any advice would help...
I'm in NYC and planning a destination wedding on Hilton Head Island, SC. Vetting vendors is tricky, not being able to meet them in person! We did drive down since FI has some family a few hours away and chose our reception location, and will have to go there again at least once for tastings and meeting with more vendors. My biggest worry right now is choosing hair and make-up artists! I fear by the time I am down there again it will be too late to book, before having done trials. We are also bringing in a photographer, but not from NY, from Florida - we didn't like anyone on HHI! Everything I've been doing is mostly internet research to find people, and a few NY bridal events, mostly looking for invites and such.
I actually just got back from my "scouting" trip to Turks & Caicos but I was not originally planning on doing this. I was choosing everything based on research I'd done online, and then all of a sudden I realized I am just the type of person that needs to see what I'm signing up for...especially since weddings are not cheap! I'm SOOOOOOO happy I decided to do it. Unless you are the most laid-back type of bride, I would strongly advise that you find a way to go scout out your location(s)- you need to know exactly what you are getting yourself into. I was able to determine that T&C was the island I was set on, so then it was just a matter of looking at a few hotels once I was there. Nothing can take the place of a face-to-face conversation and for some reason, sitting down at a table and discussing is just way more effective than doing it over the phone. Also, I am bringing a photographer from Brooklyn (she is approx. the same price as the island photographer even when you account for flight & hotel!), and I'm not using any musicians/outside caterers so the only vendor I am working with is the florist and the hotel is really handling that- I just give them all my tear sheets to pass onto her and they come back with the pricing. Hope that helps!
@piglet506 I also just got back from a scouting trip in riviera maya and I'm sooo glad i went. Not only was my top choice somewhat of a disappointment (the service was bad) but the one resort I was ambivalent about was the won that won me over! It's so valuable to see things in person and speak face to face with the people who will be handling your wedding. Funny my top choice resort was actually setting up for a wedding on the day we visited and the mother of the bride was not happy at all... she tried not to say it in so many words to us but i could see it on her face!
I'm from manhattan and planning a destination wedding in Aruba - and trying to do it in May 2010. At this point I'm not sure if it will actually happen!!
Check out Mrs. Lovebird's archives. She was a NYC bride who had a Cancun wedding!
I'm in Orange County and planning a St Maarten wedding in May. We did most of our research online but eventually went down there to check things out. I'm glad we did....although we went with what we chose with our online research, it helped reinforce why.

Are there any tri-state based destination brides on the board? trying to find brides who are in the same boat as me - either have been married or looking to get married in Mexico/carribbean area or even further away -(europe, asia, etc) Do you do all your searching online? Are you visiting places? How are you choosing? word of mouth or via your own personal research? Do you go to the bridal shows anyway (it s eems like there is a bridal show or trunk show like every week here in NYC)? I like going to the bridal shows for idea but its kind of disappointing that nothing really applies to me (all the vendors are NYC based).
