I think if you file a request in person at the marriage bureau you can get copies same day.
Otherwise, I believe the wait is approx. six weeks. That's how long it took us to get ours. You'll need several copies, though, to complete the entire name change process.
I'm actually going through this now, so I'll let you know next week whether the immediate turn around is truth or fiction. Or you could always call the City Clerk's office.
Bottom line, though, I think for a December trip you're better off calling the airline ASAP and getting the name changed. Just because passport turnaround is quick NOW doesn't mean it will be that way in a few months, and if there's any glitch at all in the process of getting a new license, SS card or passport you're going to be in a tough spot.
Thanks! if you can, post back and let me know whether that's a possibility :) I'll try to call the clerk's office next week.
My issue with changing the ticket, and the reason i put it in my new name, is because for work-related reasons, i will need to change my name with SS by the end of November. SO i figured i would definitely take care of dmv and ss by then and I feel like it'll be a pain if my passport doesn't match my license when i am traveling.
Just looking at the passport site, it does look like they have a procedure in place for travel taking place within 14 days, so i guess it's possible i could take advantage of that if it came to that (eek, that stresses me out!)
yiiiiiiiiiiiiikes. did you find anything out since the last time you posted?? My experience tells me you might not make it, even with 14 day expedited passports. It takes a few weeks (2?) after the wedding to get your marriage certificate in the mail (depending on how sharp your officiant is), which is what you need to take to the Social Security office. Then the Social Security office takes exactly 7 days to issue you a new card. Then you apply for a new passport.
you DEF have to have your SSN changed before applying for a passport, or else they will reject it for inconsistencies. Normally the Passport application can take 6 weeks, expedited takes 3 weeks or so...and then there a 14-day in person option, but I think that's under very special circumstance (tho I could be wrong...but I thought it was for State Dept employees, etc).
if possible, I would try to keep your maiden name if you're flying internationally 2 months later. And DEFINITELY don't fly when your passport & your SSN/DMV say different things, I know people who haven't gotten through customs because of that.
SORRY to be a debbie downer!!!
EEEK!!! ok now i'm totally freaked out (but seriously, thanks, because obviously i'd rather be freaked out now than think it's going to be fine and then having it not be at the last minute!)
OK so first of all, according to the passport info on the website, the 14 day in person is available to anyone traveling outside the country within that span and all you need is a valid ticket. So, that should help things a bit.
Also i'm a little confused, because the passport app doesn't require you to submit a copy of your SS card...just your current passport and marriage certificate. So why would i have to wait for the card in the mail prior to submitting the app? I mean, obviously i'm going to go to the SS office immediately, but is there any reason to wait 7 days before filing the passport app?
Seriously though, thank you so much for the advice...i'm thinking about my options and trying to evaluate what i should do now!
You can get your passport in 1 day - I work across the street from the office - I went one day, filled out the paperwork and got it the next day so it doesn't take two weeks...
@esqbee: Yup..I work on Hudson and Houston (right across the street from my office). I brought my paperwork one day - and the next day went back and picked it up..it costs a little more but didn't have to wait for it!

I am getting married in mid-October, and i just booked an international trip for mid-December. I took the bold step of booking the flight in my married name, because I know i want to change everything immediately and planned to be very on top of that after the wedding (and the expedited passport application doesn't take very long).
BUT, i just realized the one wild card that didn't occur to me - I can't submit my passport application until I have certified copies of my marriage certificate! How long did it take you to get your certificate and how long after you were married could you order certified copies?
I'm realizing now booking this flight in my new name might've been a costly mistake!
Thanks bees!
