Oh! Oh! I'm getting one through my catering package...BUT! Before that I had been researching a lot of cake places.
I love
Michelle Doll Cakes starts at $10/slice
(Such a sweetheart, so down to earth and prices are not that bad considering her level of work and that she's all over the magazines!)
Mark Joseph Cakes. LOVE it too!
HoneyBeeCakes (Flushing, NY) starts at $7/slice
@Gerbera: I had been emailing with Mark Joseph cakes--they do gorgeous work!! A little pricy for us I think, but thanks for the other suggestions!! :) Where are you getting married? I wish our venue included the cake--it would make this so much easier, lol.
Yeah, I love Mark Joseph. But definitely $$$$. Didn't know what your price range was, ya know. :)
Michelle really is such a sweetheart! When I had initially contacted her back in mid 09 she was pregnant and due any time but she was super willing to work with me on a tasting schedule. She works out of her home I believe in Brooklyn, NY. I think it's just amazing that being a one woman team she made such a name for herself!!!
HoneyBeeCakes I found ... I forgot how... but I think she is a self starter as well. If I remember correctly when I just found her she did not have a storefront yet but I think she does now. :)
GL!
P.S. I'll try to dig through my emails to see what other cake places I contacted. I'm sure there are more. :)
ETA: Getting married on Long Island at Vanderbilt Mansion which is catered by Lessings. There's a cake that comes with the package by a local bakery on LI. It's probably good that it came with otherwise I'll be tempted to spend more $$$ on it.... :D
Michelle Doll cakes are also gorgeous--I saw one in NY mag that was just amazing. Unfortunately, I think a little pricy for us--we'd like to stay under $1500, and we're estimating about 175 guests (gahhhh). I'll definitely check out HoneyBee Cakes. Thanks! :)
Has anyone used Crumbs cupcakes for their wedding? They're definitely less expensive than cake, but I'm concerned about their presentations--the pictures Crumbs sent me of their wedding displays look really messy and unprofessional. :(
The Sugar Chic LI but prices are quite reasonable
Pastry Girl Cakes LI again
we're doing cupcakes.. cakes are pricey and i am a huge cupcake fan
check out cupcake cafe... their cupcakes are really pretty and they can also do a small round cake if you'd like to top your cupcake display with a cake.

i love Crumbs too but i just think display wise, they don't look great.. however i'd had a custom cake made there before and it was beautiful
We had a tasting with Nana Pearl's Wooden Spoon (www.nanapearls.com). It's a one-woman operation - Lali bakes in a leased kitchen in LIC and uses the Penn Club (ooh la la fancy) to do tastings. I think we're going to go with her!!!!!
Why:
1) Starts at 8.50 a slice - wayyyyyy more reasonable than the fancy schmancy big names.
2) When I spoke to her on the phone, she took the time to get a feel of our personalities, the vibe of the wedding, what we liked/didn't like, and our aesthetic tastes.
3) She brought sketches (done both after initial call, and after I emailed her with more specific ideas for the look of the cake) and look books to the tastings.
4) She brought cupcakes (so cute!) in the flavors she thought were perfect for us, based on our convo - white cake w/ raspberry and white choc. frosting (yum), chocolate cake w/ latte and zabaglione frosting (the base for tiramisu - yum yum), and white cake with creme brulee frosting (would be inside the cake), complete with caramel crunchies (yum yum YUM!)
Plus, she does her cakes and cupcakes in organic or vegan if you so desire!!!! Love her!!!! Love the cakes!!!! *spazzes out in sugary vendor-love glory*
@Ex Libris: Her cakes look really nice! And omg, the flavors you tasted sound amaaazing.
We just booked a tasting with Deborah from City Sweets (http://citysweets.com/index.html) but if she doesn't work out, we'll definitely be contacting Nana Pearl (and I love that name).
Oh I'm getting cookie favors from the Sugar Chic! Melissa is so great to work with! The cookies look and taste great! :)
My friend had this small bakery do her cake & cupcakes and it tasted great! They deliver all over the NYC area -- They dont have a store front just yet but they do great work out of a catering facility (I believe). Very different stuff with funky flavors. Check 'em out:
Also, this place does cool cupcakes too.

GL! : )
We are getting ours from Carlos's bakerery in Hoboken..it comes with our package so we didn't have a choice....the place is ridiculous now that the guy is on TLC...the line on the weekend is wrapped around the block...i mean its just cake!
I got mine from April Reed Cakes and it was delicious and gorgeous!!!!
Carlos bakery! I live a few mins from this place in Hoboken, so I always go there. I absolutely love their cake. I'm getting the groom's cake from there since ours was already included.
@Ex Libris,
I contacted Nana Pearl's for a Grooms Cake! I wanted egg & nut free.
But more than I wanted to spend on the Grooms' Cake. Oh well.
Gerbera, were you able to get in touch with her??? I emailed her early last week to hammer down some numbers and she seems to MIA. I am so bummed - I'm going to email her again when we get back from vacay but then I'll have to start looking around again...good thing I have all of these other suggestions!!!

My venue doesn't include the cake in the package, so I'm on the hunt for a great cake/great cupcake bakery. Anyone have any suggestions for a cake/cupcake place? Where are you all getting your cake/desserts from?
