What sort of budget do you have?  The W hotels are nice!  MY FI and I also spent many a date night at the London Hotel before we finally got our own apartment. ;)

Is it just for one night?

    What's your budget?

    Where's the reception?

I'd want to be on Central Park, in one of the grand old hotels, and I'd finagle a way to find a reduced rates: Plaza, or the Pierre. Or maybe the Carlysle, for the classic old New York experience. (Sigh.) Yeah, since the Plaze went semi-condo, I'd go to the Carlysle.

I don't think I'd want to be in one of the hyper-modern hotels, for this particular occasion, but maybe that's just me.

what's your budget? would you be getting dressed / taking pix there as well? else i'd say focus on a place that's convenient to everything and not a huge splurge. between getting back late from the reception (we had too much fun and stayed till the end) and the oot brunch the next day, groom and i did nothing but crash for a few hours. we were out cold so it wouldn't have mattered if there was a double tub, etc or not.

The Waldorf Astoria for the quintessential NYC experience! It is owned by Hilton now, so if you have Hilton points, you may be able to get a reduced price/ free stay!
