If you'll consider doing the ipod thing (you supply the music, but a dj will bring the equipment and spin things/mc), then I'd go with Color Blind.  The only other recommendation is Dash of Class.  Otherwise, try either Craigslist or keep your fingers crossed - this is one area where finding someone under $1k is almost (though not entirely) impossible and you may well get what you pay for.

Also, depending on how much time you need, you can try to haggle a bit.  I am using more than 5 hours, so the price worked out for me.  Don't use the Pros, which is within your budget.  Too many horror stories from many, many brides.  GL.
