Long-time lurker, 1st time poster here 🙂 It’s kind of a long one…
We’ve started the ring-serach and my bf is planning to buy the diamond online from James Allen, but we really don’t like any of their settings. I have very simple/classic taste and want a platinum thin (< 2mm) high-profile solitaire setting for a round stone. We haven’t had much luck finding anything that we love online, but I just tried on this Tacori 1.5mm milgrain setting and fell in love – http://www.michaelcfina.com/engagement-wedding-rings/engagement-rings/tacori-platinum-15mm-milgrain-setting-40-15-RD-65.html [Pics below]
Thing is, we don’t want to spend ~2k for just the setting (especially one so simple). My friends suggested bringing some pics to a local jeweler to see if they can replicate it. My questions are:
1. Can anyone recommend a good affordable jeweler in NYC who could “replicate” this setting? It doesn’t have to be an EXACT Tacori replica regarding the milgrain/crescent design. Im mostly in love with the thin delicate band and the simple high-profile “gallery” area. A friend recommended Little King. Has anyone else had experience with custom e-rings from them?
2. How much do you typically save getting a custom setting vs. buying designer? Is it worth it? Can anyone share their custom e-ring experience?
3. Has anyone purchased a loose stone online and a setting from a brick & mortar jeweler? Did you have the jeweler mount the diamond or did you ship the setting to the online diamond retailer to mount it? If the jeweler mounted it, what was their policy regarding potential damage to the diamond? Would/did they assume responsibility?
