labella, thank you for your response. please do send me info at ghkim9@yahoo.com. i'm not opposed to spending 100/pp as long as the charge for bride is not too much above that. look forward to hearing from you!
When you say $100 per service, are you referring to $200 per bridesmaid ($100 for hair and $100 for makeup) or do you mean $100 total per bridesmaid?
i mean 100 per bridesmaid per service. in the end, i'd like to spend less than that, but i'm willing to work with people. i am currently talking to someone who will do makeup for the bride for 150 and makeup for bridesmaids for 75. if there is someone who will do 100 for each person, then that is a comparable price and would def consider it. as for hair, i've found it more difficult to find someone who will do hair onsite for a reasonable price. i've found someone who will do hair for 100/pp but i know nothing about her and i don't think she normally does weddings, so i'm still looking for the perfect, but affordable, hair and makeup team in nyc.
I used Sachiko Yanase, who is awesome, and in high demand. Her 2007 prices were $500 for:
hair and makeup for bride (actual date plus trial) AND
hair and makeup for 2 girls
any service after that is $70 additional.
You can contact her at sachikoyanase@earthlink.net
She's based out of Astoria, Queens and will travel anywhere within 1 hour from there without charge.
I've heard alot of great things about Sachiko but haven't been able to get in touch with her. I did email her - twice - at the above address, but no response for a few days. Is she hard to reach? She sounds perfect!
I think Sachiko charges additional for the trial (which is what she quoted me in late October). I believe she may be in Japan right now? She goes back fairly often. Otherwise, she's really responsive to phone inquiries as well.
If you contact Beauty On Call (they are located in Chicago) they actually contract out to freelancers all over the country. So you can work through them to find you hair and make up people in NY. I am using htem now and have scheduled my trials for Feb. They're prices were pretty resonable.
There are three levels of stylist you can get. National, Senior, Regional. Regional being the cheapest (the one I am using). I think it's $175 for each service for the bride (the price includes the trial tho!) and $75 for each service for the bridesmaids.
So far my communications with them have been great! Here's the website - www.beautyoncall.com
Also if it's convieinent try going down to Chinatown to some of the salons there. I bet they can do it for you pretty cheap if you can get your wedding party down there before the wedding!
A question about Sachiko does she do all the hair and make up for the entire bridal party? Doesn't that take forever? After reading the other posts she sounds like a fantastic deal! Except I have seven bridesmaids, myself and two mothers to get done! If it was only one person wouldn't it take hours??
She can do your entire wedding party if you ask, but you are right, it would take a long time.
She recommends Stacey Pitt to do hair and she can do make up to speed things along. They team up sometimes for larger weddings.
ghkim9: have you tried Ai Sakai? she often works with sachiko and her rates are comparable. i'm using stacy pitt for hair and she is super reasonably priced for the quality of the work.
Sachiko and Ai are usually mentioned along with Reiko Utsugi. They all work together sometimes on larger weddings.
I'm not sure of Ai or Reiko's contact information. But maybe you can google for it.
I have Ai's number if anyone is interested.
Also check out loislam.com She was booked on my date and sorry, i don't remember her prices
thanks, ladies, for the tips! i will try to get in touch with ai and reiko. are they primarily makeup artists or mainly do hair? i have an appt with stacy pitt as well in a couple of weeks and am praying that i love her so that i can put a stop to the whole search! but until then, i wanted to give myself at least a couple of options for makeup and a couple for hair. so far, i have a couple of trials set up for makeup but only one for hair. how many trials do you think is reasonable?
canary: what did you think of stacy pitt?
If you're interested, you can also try Sissi Chan. I'm having her do my BM's hair and her rates are very reasonable. She quoted me $50 for BM's hair and her email is sissichan@gmail.com I've never met her in person, but she's very responsive and her portfolio of hairstyles is very impressive. However she does only work with long hair. If you want to see pictures let me know!
Oh and she does do makeup too, but i've never seen too much makeup work so I don't know how good/bad it is.
Thanks MissBlueBear - I did look into Sissi Chan as she was so well recommended by ladies on this website, but she is already booked on my date :(
If you need someone for just hair, try Benjamin at Salon Kiara, (212) 832-2699. He's a skilled stylist, and is also excellent at blow dries. I'm not sure how much his updo rates are, but his cut/styles are only $60-70. I know he's done a wedding in long island before, so he definitely travels.
ghkim9: stacy is fantastic. she's really great at what she does. she can practically replicate any picture you show her. at my trial, she tried a few hairstyles, since i wasn't quite sure what i really wanted. so she showed me textured updos. now i'm a bit more interested in vintage and sleeker styles and she was more than happy to do another trial to test that out. my appointment with her lasted about 2 hours and we tried out about 5 styles. i plan on posting my pictures soon, so that way you'll have a better idea! i'm using sally duvall for makeup, though she is on the pricier side compared to sachiko and ai (but her package rate is really reasonable if you have a lot of bridesmaids or moms who need makeup). with my 6 bridesmaids (and other lady family members who'll need makeup) i found it most economical for me to hire both stacy and sally for their day rate.
canary: i actually scheduled an appt with stacy for hair and sally for makeup too! let me know how your trials go - i'd love to see your pics.
I used Lois Lam for makeup and Stacy Pitt for hair. Both were amazing and VERY reasonably priced!
ghkim9: i posted my sally pics a while ago here (http://www.weddingbee.com/2007/11/19/all-made-up-3/)... i'm doing my stacy post soon so you'll see those too! i love them both because they're so laid back, yet super professional. they knew exactly what i wanted even when i could really articulate it very well.
miss canary, love the hair and makeup pics! i'm so excited - i have my sally duvall trial this saturday. i didn't see any day rates on her website but would love to have her with me for the majority of the day. were her day rates a lot more than the price per person?

Can anyone recommend a good hairstylist and/or makeup artist who will travel to the wedding site in NYC? I'm trying to keep the budget to under $100 for each service since I have 6 bridesmaids.
