Personally, I would go for 24 Fifth, but I want a more formal wedding! It sounds like it's no big deal to have the ceremony and reception in the same space (makes a good excuse for guests to check out another area during cocktails), and I love the idea of a 1920s style elegant ballroom.
My brother and his wife had their rehearsal dinner at Battery Gardens, which was GORGEOUS, but being limited to daytime makes it not as appealing, especially, as you said, for those traveling who would be left with nothing to do later in the evening. Plus it sounds like you might regret not having a more formal, romantic, evening wedding. And the construction would scare me.
Good luck! Let us know how it works out!

Hi there, I am in a somewhat enviable position but it's driving me crazy. My fiance and I fell in love with two NYC venues this weekend and now we can't choose just one!
The main problem is that each venue is so different in style 1) Battery Gardens is all white and cool and breezy, more modern, still elegant 2) Twenty Four Fifth is old school 1920's gold candelight ball room area, more formal wedding
