I reciently became engaged, (YAY!) and my fiance and I started to think about wedding plans. In theory, it all seems like exactly what we want–the Catholic church ceremony, traditional manor house reception, an amazing band, white cake, champaign toasts–A true old world, New York wedding–which all seem’s amazing. Then I started looking at the costs. My fiance says that I shouldn’t worry about it, its not an issue right now–but it’s an issue to me because the ceremony costs alone are $3200. (Yes, to get married in my own church would cost $3,200) Venue space, without catering ranges from $4,000-$11,000, and the cost of catering is anywhere from $200-$400 a head, with the average being $280ish. This isn’t counting the dress, flowers, transportation, guest favors, invitations, the cake…..
I’m REALLY overwhelmed by these figures, the guest list, and the effort that has to go into this whole soiree. I love my fiance, he loves me–I’m thinking about elopment. But to where? Paris is beautiful–but their marriage laws have alot of red tape–so where else could I think about going, that’s just as magical, but not as stressful as NY?

@vintagebride143: Think about what you want from ‘magical’. Do you want beaches (St Lucia), history (Scotland), mountains (Colorado) etc etc…

We eloped to Antigua. They can do a same day wedding – license in the morning, get the marriage officer assigned, tell them when and where, and you can be married that day, wherever on the island you choose. They actually don’t do them in the courthouse anymore, but it’s cool – in Antigua, the matrimonial mountain comes to Mohammad.
We got married at the inn we were staying at with the Inn Keeper and his wife volunteering to be witnesses and photographers (also arranged on the day). We were driven to Jabberwock Beach after the ceremony and swam in our wedding clothes (mine was technically a €5 nightgown).
Totally our style (no Vegas for us, thanks), totally more than we hoped for, and all over the course of a long weekend (we live in Europe). The whole shebang, including round-trip flights from Europe, inn stay, legal stuff (the official cert and copies were ready the next morning for pick-up), entertainment on the island, photos etc. all under €2,000 ($2,500-ish?). Not to everyone’s taste, I know (pro-photos are non-negotiable for many people) but I wouldn’t change an instant or a single detail of it.
