Okay guys, this is going to be a weird question, so please bear with me.
I have weird armpits. Like, when I lift my arms up, where most peoples armpits go inwards (are, in fact, ‘pits’), mine go out, like little bulges when the skin is pulled tight like that. It’s not my glands, and they’ve been like this at least since I was at the end of high school, and I don’t recall prior to that (maybe it’s a puberty thing?) When my arms are down it just sort of looks like an excess flap of skin.
It is starting to really bother me – I seem to have problems with deodorants and sweating (I can sweat through even the most ‘ultra dry’ deodorant), and because of the shape they are they often run against my clothes and I get really bad sweat stains.
I’ve been slightly overweight for my height – I’m 5’6″, and was at my heaviest 74kg (163lbs), but that was only recently, and I was tiny at the end of high school/start of University. I’m down to 71kg now and continually losing, but I don’t think my weight has much to do with this.
Has anyone else got this problem? I bought my wedding dress on Saturday, and in the mirror in the shop caught a glimpse of my underarms in the dress and all the excess skin looked like turkey necks. It’s awful.
Any advice on how common this is? Anyone else had it? Did you get it treated? How? (apologies if this is in the wrong board, but it didn’t seem to fit in ‘Fitness’ or ‘Wellbeing’)

In general, no one has pretty armpits. And women have tendency to see flaws where no one else does. I think it’s likely you’re seeing problems where there are none. I bet no one else would ever notice.
However there is a rare genetic disease called pseudoxanthoma elasticum which could potentially cause what you’re describing. If you think that might be the case it may be worth having a chat with your GP.
Edit: Also, congratulations on getting your dress!

@aliciaspinnet: Thank you for that – looking at that, the picture of the skin on the armpit there isn’t quite like mine – mine are literally like a single bum . I guess because I’ve never seen ANYONE else with armpits like mine, I’m a little sensitive about them, but I appreciate the help!
I’m hoping to talk to my GP about it soon, but there’s been a bit of a problem raised with my registration because I’ve moved house, so I can’t speak to anyone until that’s sorted! Booo…
(and thanks, it’s just about sunk in now and I’m quite excited!)

Ah, in that case it’s not likely then. I’m sure you’re your own worst critic, I bet you looked beautiful in your dress!

My arm pits are like what you describe. They don’t go in at all. There is a bulge. Mine have been this way as long as I can remember but its possible they weren’t when I was younger. I don’t know. Do you ever have pain? Sometimes I will get a weird ache in one of them but I never know why.

@MistySoda: Occasionally I get pains in them, but usually that’s when I’m sick, or getting sick, and my glands are swollen. My glands tend to get pretty sore and sensitive when they’re up.
ETA: although the more I think about it, the more I think I do get them randomly from time-to-time as well, non-gland related…

@bambinoblue: how funny you should post this, I have a problem with deodorant building up on my sweaters and I never considered the shape of my pits to be the culprit!
mine bulge out slightly depending on what position I put them in. I’m pretty sure it’s a muscle. I’m guessing this because I can feel it flexing when I push on it. but I never noticed before.
I don’t think you should worry about it. people’s bodies are different. I have not-so-slim ankles and wrists that no amount of exercising is ever going to fix. I don’t think anyone would notice your pits at all!

@bambinoblue: Were you/are you an athlete? Sometimes mine will bulge outwards because I used to be a competitive swimmer and my shoulders can pop in and out easily. When I’m being photographed, I am careful to move my shoulders and arms more gracefully. There’s nothing wrong with practicing what to do with your arms so they look flattering for your wedding, I’m totally doing it 🙂
