Well, I'm not psychologist, but I know a couple of things about memory. For one thing, short term memories are probably more accurate/realistic. Then when your brain processes the short term memories and decides which ones to store as long term memories, they get stored in a slightly different way. Each time you think about one of these stored memories, you have to "retrieve" it from your brain. Each time you retrieve a memory, your brain has a tendency to change it slightly. That is probably why you are seeing yourself in the memories--you inserted that vision of yourself into the memory because you knew you were there. Does that make any sense? I hope I didn't totally butcher that concept. It's been awhile since I took psychology. :)
What an interesting thought.... I am a Psych major, but still taking classes! I had to stop and think about a memory to really be able to say how I relive them, and I came to the conclusion that I see them in first person unless I a) am thinking about it retrospectively - like, I realize something that me at that age didn't realize, and so that's what the memories' focus is on or b) I have seen a home movie or a picture of that memory or something closely associated with that memory. For instance, in memories of my first house, I picture myself. I think that's because my memories are vague, and my mind is filling in the gaps with what I've learned since from pictures, stories, etc.

So, today I was just thinking about some childhood memories while I was sitting on the train on my way to work (I like to reminisce lol) and I actually have quite a few things that I can remember from a very young age. Sometimes I'm not sure if they're real or not, and I was thinking "no, this can't be real because I can see myself." But then I realized in just about all my memories, when I'm replaying them in my mind, it's like a video and I'm watching myself. Obviously I didn't really experience these things in such a way that I can see myself (unless I lived my life in front of a mirror 24/7), but my memories are fairly accurate when I ask my mom or something if such and such event happened. So why don't I see these memories like they happened, as if I was looking out at the world and such instead of how they're replied, like they're a movie? lol This post may make absolutely zero sense, but how do you replay your memories? I assume this is the norm, but I've never really asked anyone because I never really thought about it. Any pyschologists or likes that can fill me in?
