When I was trying to decide between a Round Brilliant or an Old European Cut moissanite, I spent hours searching online for pics. While ones like these:
were somewhat useful, I couldn’t find comparisons using ordinary lighting conditions. Ultimately I chose an RB because it seemed like it would be whiter and more sparkly. When my ring arrived, I was disappointed by the green tint it often showed, especially under my office lighting – which is where I spend most of the day!
After some deliberation, I sent the ring back for the stone to be swapped for an OEC. I’m so happy I did! I’ve put together the following pics to show the differences between the stones, in case it helps anyone else trying to choose between these two cuts.
I think the RB showed a fair amout of tint under certain lighting. You can especially see the tint of the RB in the pics with the CZ stone. I didn’t realise just how much body colour it showed until I put it next to a D colour CZ! It was often a green or steely grey tint, wheres any tint the OEC shows is buttery. I *could* have been send a dud RB. When I sent the stone back I requested the brightest, whitest stone they had, with a small culet, so they probably hand-picked my OEC but not my RB. Looking at the product shots above, it’s also possible that the OEC looks brighter because there’s more white light bouncing back from the larger facets.
It seemed to me that the facets on the RB were “dusty”- undefined and too many. You can see that in the RB pics below. The facets of the OEC is what sold it for me. They’re clear cut and make the stone look brighter. I also love the rounded profile.
The pics don’t show the sparkle, but I took some videos which I might post here if people are interested. The RB *is* more glittery, so if you’re interested in that, the RB might be the way to go. The rainbow sparkles were small and glittery, and the sparkle was uniform across the stone. It’s very reflective and because the top of the stone is flatter, the sparkle reminded me of reflections on water.
The OEC is a chunkier cut, so the flashes of colour are bigger. It’s not as rainbowy as the RB, and the sparkle isn’t as uniform. I think this is what makes the OEC seem more “sparkly”. Every time it moves, the light bounces off the stone in a different way. Also, the sparkle is more white, whereas I think the RB sparkle is more rainbow. For me, I prefer the sparkle of the OEC because it’s not so flashy. It’s a more understated sparkle. However, it’s still more colourful than a diamond or white sapphire, just moissanite toned down.
I’m very happy with my OEC. I feel it has all the positive qualities of the RB but with an added brightness and solidity from the facets, if that makes sense.
I hope this helps anyone trying to decide between the two!
EDIT: I’ve made these pics bigger, I hope it’s easier to see!
