I was looking for advice on this, and I remembered just how helpful you all have been in the past, so I thought I’d try here.
I recently went through two interviews at a new job in my same career. This new opportunity is something I’ve been waiting on for quite some time, and I’m really excited. My current job didn’t know that I was looking.
Recently, the new company called with great news – they’d like to move forward with an offer. However, they’d like to contact my current direct supervisor in addition to the list of references I’ve already provided. Awk.Ward.
My question is this – how do I have this talk with my supervisor? She’s a friend of mine, but she never takes people leaving all that well, and I’m not sure quite how to bring everything up without completely dropping a bomb on her and then asking for a giant favour, essentially.
As a note – the new company is a huge, reputable company. I raised my eyebrows at this practice, but I’m willing to do it – that’s pretty much how badly I want this job.
