I know I don’t post here very often, but I just needed an opinion/a place to vent. I know you guys give great advice!
Anyway, I’ll just get right to the point. The air conditioner in my office is broken and it’s almost unbearable to work in!
I share an office with a co-worker who absolutely loves the heat. I mean she used a space heater in the middle of summer!
Our air conditioner has been broken for about 6 months now and I even brought a fan from home, but the fan just blows hot air! It doesn’t cool anything.
Everyone who walks into our office comments on how hot it is! As soon as you step outside of our office, the rest of the building is nice and cool. It’s just ours that’s unbearably hot!
I spoke with someone about it and they came up to take a look at the air conditioner but didn’t fix anything. They said they would order more fans I could use (which also never happened).
I just don’t know if I should talk to someone else (HR maybe?) or if I should just leave it alone and wait for winter? Haha.
It sucks because I’ve only worked here for 2 years, and my co-worker has been here for 11… So I kind of think they haven’t done anything about it because she likes the heat.
Anyway, I just needed to vent and am maybe hoping to hear any advice any of you might have. If I do talk to the HR manager I’m not really sure what to say…
Thanks for reading!

Sorry, not sure if I posted this in the right place. Someone can move it if they have to.

I always wear a sweater or jacket and use a space heater because it’s always cold in my office. I hate over-air-conditioned offices. I want to be able to wear the same clothing inside and outside and be comfortable. Sorry, guess I can sympathize more with your coworker… 🙁

@LlamaWife: Sorry about this! 🙁 The A/C was broken in my classroom in May and it was a nightmare, so I totally emphathize with you!
Is there anyone below the HR level that you could speak with about the issue? Is the “someone” you spoke with on the custodial staff or a supervisor of yours? Your manager is likely to be reprimanded for not handling the situation if you directly confront HR, so I would see if you can work it out with him/her first.
If it’s not handled properly soon, I would contact HR about it if it’s a serious enough issue that it’s severly and negatively affecting your work environment.

I don’t have any ideas to help (besides lots of ice water), because like JenniferG it feels like I work in a freezer 🙁
I do like the little pun in the title with the vent tho!

Yeah, I also don’t like over air-conditioned offices, but I’d rather have to wear a light jacket than be too hot and not able to do anything about it. Haha.
@brideatbeach Yeah, the person I spoke with a couple times was the custodial staff. They came up and took a look at the air conditioner for a while and then left. Never said anything to me and I didn’t hear anything for a few weeks, so I spoke with them again and they mentioned something about ordering some fans, and then again I haven’t heard anything since.
It’s just frusterating not hearing back from people, and I work in a super small office! Haha.

The AC at my place of work (a hospital, btw) was down for a few hours today. Imagine working with geriatrics in a muggy/hot area. Yeah, not a good combination.

perhaps you can get a thermometer and check the heat every day. there is a big difference if it is 75 every day or 83, know what i mean? you could try charting it daily, just so you have some evidence to show management.
is it possible to switch seats with someone else who doesn’t mind the heat?
otherwise I think you definitely have a case for your manager/ HR, you can tell them how it is distracting or perhaps affecting your work/ your computer, etc, because it is so hot.

Thank you all so much for your suggestions!
For now I think I’ll try recording the temperature every day and see how that goes and then possibly present that to HR.
Thanks again everyone!
