So the big moment has arrived that I've waited a month for. Just got an email that my slideshow is up and I'm dying to see that it's private bc I hate the pictures. I actually feel like I'm going to throw up right now bc I hate them so much.

They look un-retouched and I HATE THEM. I sent the photog like 5 emails already. I seriously hate them.

    What the *&^%.

Don't they touch up the slideshow?

I got a sneak peak of a few pics and they all look completely different. I don't know what to think! I'm shocked. The same pics in the slideshow look disgusting and the sneak peak ones look amazing ... what the hell happened? I don't get it?

    So pissed right now.

Out of 400+ pics, I only really liked about 75 of them. The photographer and I had very different ideas as to what looked nice. I don't know if it is the high-def digital photography or what, but I looked HORRIBLE in them, and I know there must be a way to soften them up, something a, ahem, mature bride needs. All I know is that I was in pure bliss about the wedding UNTIL I saw the pics!

Hopefully there is a way to make yours look better so you will be happy with them.

MY ARMS LOOK FAT AHHHH ... seriously ... my arms look huge like triple what they really are in these pictures. Why? Wtf. My face looks so harsh ... you can see like little bumps on my skin ... in the sneak peak ones my skin looks flawless but in these it's like I had an allergic reaction and am suffering from freaking hives or something ... wth. I think I might die right now.

Well the photog just emailed me back that it takes hours and hours to address fine details but he will as long as I'm ok with all the proofs taking much longer than I expected so that he can spend time on the slideshow. I said ok b/c those slideshow pictures are most important. He told me he spent almost 50 hours enhancing them already - there's around

Do you eventually get a copy of the retouched pictures?  Or do you have a print credit that will utiize retouched images?

I wouldn't worry about the small blemishes on your face, since those can generally be easily removed using the clone stamp tool in photoshop.

See if your photographer fixes these issues for you, and if not there are services online that will retouch pictures for you (I've only tried one and it didn't work out, but hopefully someone can recommend a good online retouching service).

He has spent FIFTY hours enhancing your photos? I don't understand what could take that long. My sisters didn't have any retouching or enhancing in their wedding photos and they are beautiful. What could be wrong? What kid of film was used?

I haven't had my wedding yet, but I've found in the past when getting photos from events that I've been initially really disappointed then realised afterwards I liked them better than I thought.

It sucks that you're not happy with them though, I hope the photog. does a bit better with them!

There are free programmes online like Picnik where you can make basic adjustments like softening the overall picture and so on. You don't even have to download that one. It might be worth a try playing around with it to see if that helps any?

Wow, this is a big fear of mine. I feel so frustrated for you!!!

Since there is more than one lady here with similar problems, do you guys have any suggestions on how to avoid this? Was it a bait and switch situation?

Flamingred, i have no clue about photo retouching ... but yeah! That's what he told me. So .. not sure what he could have done b/c they are pretty "raw" looking.

I will have this figured out soon though. Thank goodness he got back to me and settled how I feel!

:( I'm sure he'll get them retouched sooner rather than later, and you'll LOVE them after that! Can't wait to see them!

@futuremrsgreen - Always make sure to see full weddings as presented to a client so you can know what level of editing will be done as well as what their entire body of work looks like.  Websites and blogs make up for about the top 10-15% of images as judged by the photographer and usually they spend the most time on those.  The more you see and educate yourself on / about your pending photographer the less surprises down the line.

Sometimes issues can be artistic - the photographer was hired for their art, eye, and processing style but maybe the client has a change of heart.  This can be changed although your better off selecting the right artist for you from the outset.  i.e. don't hire a photojournalist and get mad that there's only 1 shot of you looking at the camera. Or don't hire someone who uses lots of textures and tonal treatments and want extra bright colors...

Sometimes, issues are with ourselves.  Everyone, including supermodels have insecurities about their body and looks.  Unfortunately, only you have control in how that plays out in your pictures though.  There are some things they can do for wrinkles and such, but all the added "plastic surgery" benefits take loads of time and are usually only done on purchased images or album images, etc. *there are more flattering angles for every different kind of body, but they can still only help a bit.

Sometimes the issue can be a bait and switch.  This is rare although increasingly more popular as people get DSLR cameras and soon fancy themselves a pro.  Hire a good name, examine their work from multiple weddings, if something seems fishy run away.  You spend all day with them and need to feel comfortable with them.

    hope that answers your question.

As for the OP.... I'm really sorry.  I'm glad your photographer is working with you.  Maybe they were RAW photos?  Either way take a breath, sleep on things, look at things with fresh eyes and wait for the retouched images.

Being that each individual photo can take between 2-60 minutes (or more) to edit/retouch, I think maybe you are looking at just the raw proofs in the slideshow?  I don't know how your photog works, but he/she may be just showing you the untouched photos, which you are to choose from, then he retouches/enhances those?

Photoshopping a photo can be time consuming, and it's really half of the photo process.  Shooting the photos is the first half, but modern day enhancing is the other 50%, in general.

I'm not sure if my photographer retouched my pictures before I saw them or not but my skin looked perfect and flawless in them even though it's not.  Maybe he used a filter to sort of blur it out on the camera?  It does sound like they are unretouched photos.  Is it too much to expect you to have pictures where you look nice?

All our proofs were "raw" - ie, not retouched.  In your actual album and/or in photos you order, your photog will retouch them all.  For me that means getting rid of the little wrinke line on my forehead : )

I agree. Hopefully you're just looking at the un-retouched photos. When I do faces/bodies/etc for portraiture stuff, it can be really time-consuming, etc. It would be a waste to retouch ones that you didn't really like in the first place.

All that being said, I'm sorry that you're disappointed. I know how jarring it can be to see shots like that. I'm sure it will get straightened out, and hell, if not, there are a enough of us here that are photoshop wizzes that can fix all of that stuff. *hugs*
