College is difficult, no doubt. Why oh WHY do colleges/professors make it harder for their students to be successful in school!?
I’m just sitting her crying because I’m going to fail my online class. It is a class with 5 weekly discussions, one essay, one midterm and one final. If you do poorly on one of the discussion weeks you can make it up with an essay.
I needed to do this makeup essay so last week I began looking for the book I needed to write my essay on. The essay had to be on a certain book, you couldn’t use ANY outside sources or you would receive a 0. I have been searching all week for this book and literally no one within an hour drive has this book! Not a single library, not a single book store. I swear I called over 20 places looking for this damned book in my non existent spare time during finals week. The ONLY way I could have gotten this book was to order it off Amazon weeks ago.
Finally today (the day it’s due) I email the professor and tell him I’ve exhausted all efforts trying to find this book and if there is ANY way I can do a report on any other book?
He told me flat out no, if I had contacted him in a more timely manner it would be a different story. I know I waited until the day it was due (it’s due at midnight) but it was a 200 something page book and a 5 page essay. If I could have gotten the damn book today I could have finished this essay easily AND I was confident that my professor wouldn’t require reading from a book that is completely inaccessible, which is the reason I continued to hunt for it. The closest one is at a college library 1 and 1/2 hours away.
Because there are so few assignments in this class this ONE essay will make the difference between getting a B and failing. FUCK.

I hate school too!!! And – I’m so sorry you’re dealing with this!!! I have been doing school and work from 9 am to 1030 pm. I was sitting here trying to think of a creative way to get the book. Have you looked at audiobooks and those kinds of things?

My FI says try thepiratebay.com. Maybe there is a pdf file for it?

Ugh, yeah, online classes are a pain. I’m getting my master’s online and it is definitely different then taking classes when I was in college.
I’m a complete hypocrite for saying this because I am a procrastinator and I’ll wait til the last minute all the time, but you did wait til the last minute to email your prof.
I’ve been taking online classes for about 2 years now and I noticed that online classes seem to be stricter because students can cheat easier than regular classes. Also, since it’s online and you don’t have the daily interaction like you would in a regular class, that a lot of the online classes are based around communication. Sorry you are going through this.
Finger’s crossed that you won’t actually fail this class because of this essay.

College can be hard, but part of it is to learn responsibility. I have friends who are professors and honestly, imagine if you were a prof – you give your students the ability to make up things with an extra essay and one student waited until HOURS before it’s due to tell you that she can’t find the book. When did you start looking and why didn’t you tell him as soon as you realized it might be difficult? A 1.5hr long trip isn’t that bad anyway, or you could’ve paid amazon for overnight shipping. What book was it anyway? Plus, many college classes base your ENTIRE grade on one final exam, so just move on and make sure you do the best you can on the other assignments. I’m sorry that you’re frustrated, but take this as a learning experience and move on. ((Hug))

@MrsCoachBtoBee: I tried to get creative, but it just…didn’t exist. I couldn’t find any online versions or anything.
Oh I agree it’s partly my fault because I didn’t ask him sooner if there was another way to do a makeup essay. However, the professor didn’t give the opportunity to use the makeup essay IMO. It’s a 1.5 hour drive IF (total of 3 hours) I could have found someone to drive me out to the college library. I did ask my mom and she said she couldn’t. If not, it would be about a 4-5 hour journey by public transit since I don’t have a car. I honestly don’t have that sort of free time.
And, I’m sorry, but I already purchased two text books for this general education class. I mean it when I say I didn’t have money for an Amazon purchase, especially if I had to ship it overnight. I thought about doing that, but it just wasn’t feasible.
I waited until the day of to ask him what to do because it was such a small book and a short essay, and I know if I could have gotten the book this afternoon I would have been fine. I was pretty sure the book would be somewhere since he said to go find it in a library or bookstore.
I emailed him with about 10 hours left to turn in the assignment. Totally doable for me, if the source material is available to me! Like I said small book, easy topic, short essay.
I even asked if I could write on the same topic but uses sources that were available to students. No go. =/
Thanks for the support everyone. I mean that sincerely.

Ugh, that is really tough. I’m sorry it all happened that way. It’s easy for some people to say just pay for overnight shipping or drive 3 hours, but that stuff isn’t always feasable. I guess your only other option would have been to contact the prof as soon as you realized you were having trouble finding the book.. but now you know that for next time! Now I’m dying to know, what was the book?? Next time, come talk to us, I bet the bees could figure something out!! 🙂
P.S. Go sign up for Amazon Student – Free Amazon Prime for one year if you sign up using student .edu email! (meaning free 2-day shipping!)

In hindsight I definitely see that I should have contacted him sooner to tell him that the book is nowhere to be found. It sounds so stupid now, but I really wanted to exhaust all resources and be sure I couldn’t get the book before asking him for alternative. I honestly didn’t think I would have trouble to this extent. I thought I may have to shop around a bit for the book, but just not be able to get a copy at all. So I contacted him as a last resort. Ugh. I’m too tired to justify my logic. 🙂
The book is Dawn of Suez. It’s about the Suez Crisis and my thesis should have been whether or not (from the author’s perspective) the Eisenhower administration was effect in dealing with it.
Probably not the most interesting book to most people, but it is a Middle Eastern history class and this apparently was pretty monumental time for the Middle East.
Hey, thanks for the amazon.com tip!

This won’t help, but since misery loves company, I will let you know I got a D in an online class. It was Communication in the Organization. I don’t want to communicate with my co-workers online when I can just walk over to them and talk. So I thought the class was pointless and didn’t participate in weekly discussions. I then wrote the final paper ripping the class to shreds. The grade might have bumped my GPA up, but it was such a stupid class I didn’t care.
Can you try to contact the head of the department? Sometimes it helps to go over someone’s head. Having gone to three universities, I know.

@In the media: Hahaha. Thanks for the miserable company. 🙂
Your class sounds like one of those dreadful filler classes. Those….ah. Yeah. It can be aggravating trying to earn a degree in whatever serious subject you desire and have to supplement with those kinds of classes.
I strongly dislike the discussions as well. Especially when sometimes….I’m not working off a lot of material. Like a student posts a 2 sentence evaluation of the material for the week and I’m like “What do you want me to say to that!?” lol
Fortunately, this term one of my classes was Stress and Human Health. It’s one of those fluff classes and I was dreading it, but it was SO much fun. Part of my final included drawing a picture to demonstrate art therapy. I drew a stick figure (a very good one!) being pulled up and away by a bunch of balloons while another stick figure was grabbing his ankle trying to keep him grounded.
I don’t know if there is really anything to go over his head about. Maybe just a light complaint that he needs to find a different damn book OR possibly allow outside sources! I’m not sure why he wouldn’t even allow that. =/
