I just fought him like a child to put a cold wash cloth on his head! He is really hot on the outside but says he feels cold inside.

He's achey right now and his throat doesn't really hurt and he just has a fever and I  don't know what to do!

He took tylenol ... help me!

:-( Poor baby! Make sure he's drinking lots of fluids...how high is the temperature? Does he need to go to the doctor, or is it just a regular fever?

Get him to take tylenol (which you have already done) and get him to take a just-warm shower. He can also alternate tylenol with ibuprofen, they both can decrease temperature. Keep an eye on the temperature, it should start to go down within a couple of hours. I wouldn't go to emergency unless you can't bring the fever down.

And as for treatment for you ... a glass (or 2) of wine ;o)

How high is his fever? My rule of thumb is if the fever is under 102 and doesn't last more than 2 days... hang out, clear liquids, try not to infect other people. I wouldn't push the cold wash cloth issue. The fever will break on its own when it is time and he'll feel much better. Until then just let him be and keep an eye on the temp. If it goes higher than 102 get thee to an urgent care or ER asap :)

And make SURE he is drinking a lot bc he is probably sweating a whole bunch out and being dehydrated will make it take longer to heal and also give him a headache.

Lots of fluid, and keep him on the Tylenol. How high is his fever? Anything above 102 and you should probably take him to the hospital (I'm not a doctor, but that's what I've heard).

Does he have any other symptoms? Does he have a cough or anything? My suggestion since I work in healthcare is to wait a little bit before going into ER or anything since that might make it worse and there may be nothing they can do for him. Plus depending on how busy they are you may have to wait a while before you are seen. If the fever hasn't broken with Tylenol or Ibuprofen within a few hours ie: over 101 degrees then get to ER and be tested for H1N1

Check and see if it is a high temp (like over 101). If it is and accompanied by other H1N1 symptoms, you may want to see if he can get Tamiflu @ urgent care tomorrow. Otherwise, Tylenol, fluids, and rest.

He isn't sweating yet ... just got sick today! He woke up sick and now is worse. I'm not sure how high the temp is and we don't have a thermometer. He feels really warm though ... gosh I do not know how to take care of a sick person! I am a huge baby when I'm sick!

Head to a CVS and grab a thermometer. They're cheap and kind of necessary. Might want to pick up some gatorade while you're there too... Sometimes I find it easier to drink that when I'm sick than water bc I get a bad taste in my mouth.

I agree--you should get a thermometer, and if his temp is over 100 (normally it's 101, but they are makig an exception for H1N1) call his doctor to see whether he or she thinks tamiflu would be appropriate.

Otherwise, assuming he's not allergic, have him take 600mg of ibuprofen every 6 hours in addition to the tylenol. It will help with both the fever and the aches. Usually it's when people feel cold that their temperature is going up. Lots and lots of rest, lots of fluids (especially sports drinks or Pedialyte), and otherwise just ride it out. If he's not eating much that's ok, just keep up with the fluids every chance you get. If he has any trouble breathing or swallowing, call his doctor or bring him to the ER.

I hope he feels better soon!

oh you'll get really good at it, MsHymanRoth!

Call a Nurse's hotline and see what they suggest. Honestly, sometimes you just ride out the flu until certain systems show up, like difficulty breathing or swallowing.

I ditto the gatorade! The last thing i want when i'm sick is water! But gatorade, yes

Ibuprofen for the achies....also, maybe rub his calves for him. I know mine have ached so bad I just cry and having somebody rub them really helps with the pain.

Oh and wash your hands when you touch him! You don't want to get sick too but it may be inevitable.

    Hi ,

Sorry to hear he's sick, I just finished my ER rotation and saw plenty of H1N1. lots of high fevers with this bug. Unfortunately the drill typically is a bag of fluids and home you go. ERs DO NOT test for the H1N1 in normal healthy, younger people! there really is no reason to, it doesnt change the management. Tylenol or motrin every 4-6 hours for aches and fevers. LOTS!!! of fluids. This is of course assuming he doesnt have any under lying health problems. He most likely will not be given tamiful at the ER anyway depending on where you live of course but most places have strict protocols for who gets and again typically young healthy people dont. So unless he has fevers that dont break in a day or two or can't keep liquids down I would stay home where at least its a lil more comfortable. Caz trust me the ER doesnt really do much for most people with H1N1 or any other virus sorry :( I know wish there was better news for you! give it 6-10 to get all better if it is H1N1 it hangs around

Motrin works wonders with  me. Also Tynelol cold & flu - the hot lemon tea stuff. I'll knock him out but it might help him feel better when he wakes up. I also make sure there's tons of pedialyte pops in the freezer. They're usually in the kids section of the grocery store. I'm not a gatorade fan & these do the same thing - and they're great on a sore throat & when I'm sweaty with fever. They're good for "the wooshies" (as 50 calls em, hah I still love that) too.

ejs - you beat me to it!

Good call on the chicken noodle soup and getting a thermometer.  I'd also put a vote in for the pedialyte or gatorade helping with the water to stay hydrated.  Is he eating much?  Get some good nights rest so you stay healthy too.  And vitamin C!

We're seeing tons of H1N1 in the hospital, everyone has it and 99% of people are being sent home to rest unless they have difficulty breathing. So get comfy and settle in for the next week+. Sounds like his body is trying to care for itself. Motrin and fluids should pull him through I am also a huge fan of Nyquil. Good luck

I have only one more thing: get him time off from work/school (make any phone calls he needs) and then set up a very cosy sleeping arrangement (maybe with a small TV if you have one) so that he feels enticed to sleep it off as much as possible.

First, i second everyone's suggestions for the meds, taking his temperature, and lots of fluids. Also, wine and lots of hand washing for you!

Second, and i know this is terrible, but when i get this sick the thing that makes it better for me is knocking myself out with nightquil. Whenever I wake up, I take in tons and tons of liquids, eat a little soup, and knock myself out again. I always feel that I'd rather sleep it all away then be awake and miserable! But...ummm...I am in NO way a medical doc or nurse or even anyone with much medical knowledge at all! This is just what i do for myself when I get uber sick.

Ugh, I still have the flu. Just when you start to feel better, it creeps up and slaps you in the head again.

Tell him to drink fluids - like, 3 liters a day. Seriously. It's the best thing for him.

Other than that, hunker down. It doesn't go away quickly.
