I can't find a cake topper.  I've been looking at the vintage people, but they all have the froofy hearts and flowers attached to the back, which I don't like.  I don't want clay or naked people, it's not my style.  I like the animal toppers, but the ones I like are too expensive.  I would like some kind of character, not just a plain heart or monogram.  My mom told me today that if I can't find one I can afford, she'll help me, so my budget is flexible.

If I do go with people, I'd like it to look somewhat like my FI and me.  We both have dark hair and light skin.  I'm not too worried beyond that.

I've looked on etsy and can't find anything.  Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.  Thank you so much ladies.

I looked at a couple people on Etsy who do custom work - PassionArte makes cute animals and mudcards does animals and some people, but its hard to know what to suggest without an idea of your style.

I don't even know what I want, that's the hard part.  I really wanted vintage style people, but the ones I find look really cheap or like they're from the 80's.  My FI loves the idea of nintendo people or something with food, but I just can't find anything.  I would love something silly, but everything else for the wedding is very traditional, so a silly cake topper might stand out in a bad way, which is why I wouldn't mind bride/groom character animals so that it could be silly but still fit with tradition.

What about looking outside the box. If you like a certain animal or character, why not look for figurines or toys instead of "Cake topper"?? Probably cheaper too and you can buy them ala carte.

We found our cake topper at Urban Outfitters by chance.  FI wanted to walk through the store and we saw a set of salt and pepper shakers and one was a small yellow bird and the other a small blue bird.  They were only $15 and we can use them later!

Ok, so I know you're looking for figures, but hear me out here.. how about searching vintage salt and pepper shakers? There are thousands on Etsy, Ebay, in thrift shops, etc. They may perfect cake toppers because the come in couples, are the right size, and come in every shape and character imaginable! And they're cheap!

I don't know anything about your theme or feel of your wedding, but here are some I found that could work as cake toppers:

    Owls: http://www.etsy.com/view_listing.php?listing_id=43014853

    Kissing couple: http://www.etsy.com/view_listing.php?listing_id=42466591

I really wanted turtles for my cake topper (my FI and I are both alums of the University of MD) and I couldn't find one anywhere, so I made my own with some materials I found at Michaels-- I just glued some tulle and a foam board hat I cut then drew on faces with Sharpie (total cost $4.50).  I love how they turned out-- Even if every other DIY project I do for the wedding is an epic fail, I'm OK with it!

Other options I have seen people do: Salt and Pepper shakers, Wine Bottle stoppers that have cute figures on top, even pez dispensers.  I think the cake topper is somewhere you can do something whimsical or silly even if your wedding is more formal.  If you love it and it is a reflection of you, then your guests will love it too!

kirabee- At this point, salt and pepper shakers are welcome.  If I can't find something in the next couple days, I may go with either the owls or love birds shakers, they're both very cute.  I like the dutch shakers, but neither of us are dutch, so that might be a little weird.

MsTerrapin- I love your cake toppers.  That's such a good idea.  And I have always loved pez.  If there were a bride and groom set I could find, that would be it.

I found this girl at my cake shop. They're not exactly cheap, but they're really unique! When I contacted her, the 3" dolls were $100-120 and big 7" dolls are $300.

So my FI vetoed the pez idea, but I did find some really cute bride and groom salt and pepper shakers that will be perfect.  Now I just need to wait for them to come in.

    Thanks for the help ladies.
