I don't think there's anything wrong with hiring different photographers, but I'm really glad we used the same for both. The e-pics gave her a chance to get to know us, and gave us an opportunity to get comfortable around her. We got married in a different state from where we lived, so it was a little bit difficult coordinating, but we just did them on a weekend when we were in town to finalize other wedding details.
I'm having a cousin, who is an amazing photographer, or a friend do our epics so I can try to negotiate a TTD or boudiour shoot with our photographers.
Our e-pics are going to be done much before our wedding (because of a long engagement) and I want to have them done for an engagement party sometime after we actually get engaged.
I don't see a problem with it, but as a heads up your wedding photographer might, especially if you have your e pics posted at the reception. I've heard of this before because if the e-pics aren't the wedding day photographer's style, they might not want people associating them with it. I would just double check, but again, personally I think it is a good idea for your situation.
My e-session was included in my photographer's package. It's a great way for you to get a sense of how your photographer interacts with you -- and vice versa. Make sure you check with your wedding day photographer that it's okay to book a different photographer for your e-pics. My photographer specified that she (and her second shooter) are to be the only pro photogs at my wedding. I don't think it specified anything about e-pics, but this wasn't an issue since they were included in the package. Just something to think about.
@daisy40: & @BayStateBride: Hmm thanks for bringing up the not allowing other people's pictures at the wedding- this didn't even occur to me, I was just worried about not being able to interact a lot with our wedding photog before the wedding. I was thinking about using our e-pics to make a guest book, so I'll have to check with her about that.
We are using the same photog for our engagements and wedding, but if you're worried about interaction, have you thought about getting coffee or drinks? We did that with our photographer anyway as kind of an informal meeting to go over her portfolio, and I really enjoyed it!
@tee22: Yah we'd want to go meet our main photog anyway but I've chatted with her on the phone and she seems great- I think meeting her in person should ease some of the worries about not workign with the same photographer

Hey Guys-
I'm wondering if any of you went with a different photographer for your epics than for your wedding? FI and I got engaged at Bald Head Island in NC and would like to do our e-pics there, but our wedding will be in Newport, RI and it seems silly to pay for travel fees for someone from RI to get out to NC... how important do you guys think it is to have the same photographer? If it's that important I guess we don't have to do our e-pics in NC, it'd just be nice to have them in the same place we got engaged..
