- Wedding: March 2011
We just did our budget again. Previously it was 5k, with travel included but that meant driving. Now we are figuring around $6000, flexible. We are full time students so we figure our budgets “per semester” based on savings, work, work study, etc. Plus anything I can manage to shave off big chunks of textbook costs (I’m a whiz at this and can often save $400 per semester for us both!)
Anyway, we are going to have more money than I originally thought, and we’re going to be able to take care of more things right away (venue, lodging, my dress) with fewer things having to be put off until close to the wedding date.
Yay! We still have to wait a couple of months to start paying for stuff and putting deposits down, but I am so much happier and less stressed than I was before we figured this all out.
We are going to have the money to FLY vs. drive, which is a big deal. We are in Texas and marrying in Iowa and doing it over our spring break. Driving was much cheaper but was going to suck major time out of our trip and cause more stress overall. This way, since we don’t have to plan for a 22 hour trip up and a 22 hour trip back, we can actually have a little “mini-moon” in Iowa (where we go off on our own to a B&B and leave the kids with my BF or my brother for 2 nights).. before, if we drove, it wouldn’t happen due to the timing issues.
We will still need a rental while we are there and ironically it will cost almost the same as if we’d rented something to take up there and back but on this point I am splurging, just to NOT have to figure in such long driving times into our trip.
I have entered all the budget info into an online planning tool based on the new and larger amount we have to spend, and I OVERbudgeted on many, many things just to have cushion, and even with travel (which is half our budget because there are six of us to pay for flying back and forth!) and accomodations and car rental, and even assuming everyone shows up (highly unlikely) AND we have a big dinner afterwards and cake and wine, we are still at $6000 which is right where we hoped to be. In reality it will likely be much less. And we might even be able to pay for out of state guests to stay with us (we are hoping to rent out this huge 3 story house that sleep 20).. it’s not a hotel or B&B, no one on site, more like a hunter’s retreat or whatever but it is is nice and roomy and a really good deal and this new budget might let us offer to cover the cost of guests staying!
The new budget allows me to max out my dress cost at around $800 (was $600) and allows for way more than I think we will actually spend on a photographer and on clothes for the kids, etc. I just put in crazy high figures to see what the worst case would be. I will most likely still get a dress under $600 and I will still DIY many things. It’s just good to know the cushion is there.
I feel so much better now, having a clear picture of what to expect and how to pay for all this and knowing now it can REALLY happen! Whew! Just had to share!
