Okay, I have to go into labor by week 39 or I'm getting induced. It's just what they believe best for Wombat since I lost Moose at week 34. Really, they want Wombat out at week 37 and give me steriods to develop Wombat's lungs, but I really don't want to do that. What are all the crazy things you've heard to induce labor? I'm only at week 16 now, but this way I can gather all this for when the time comes. I really want to have a natural labor. Here's what I've heard:
FYI: I will be monitored twice a week after week 32 and get multiple ultrasounds after week 20. The doctors are taking special care with me, so it's not like I'll be trying to induce labor without talking to and being closely monitored by my doctor.
Walk, walk, and walk some more. This is what everyone told me when I was tired of being pregnant. I will have to ask my mom and get some more for you =)
I'm not sure if this is true or not, but I thought I'd heard somewhere in the past that sex helps bring on labor? I've always wondered about that, though. Is it dangerous to have sex past a certain point? And I agree with the walking. I think lots of walking should help! :)
@JamaicaBride: Thanks! I can totally walk a lot, so that's easy. My dogs will surely enjoy it too.
@Jenn23: Actually I said to my husband in front of the High Risk Doctor (HRD) that we were going to have a lot of sex at the end of my pregnancy. The HRD actually said that one of the creams they insert into a pregnant woman to induce her is a chemical that is found in sperm. He said it's very good to have sex at the end of pregnancy to help induce. Totally forgot that. Doctor recommended, healthy way to induce. Sweet!
My family swears by eating Kraft mac and cheese with A-1 sauce. Just make yourself a bowl and pour some A-1 on top. Totally random, I know.
@bree72: I don't care if it's random. I'm willing to try anything so they don't give me medication to induce me. Plus, I love Kraft Mac and Cheese!!
I've heard walking, spicy foods, sex ... but one of my friends tried all of those (she went hiking in the foothills four days after her due date, ate ethiopian food for three days running, and, well, she spared us the details on the sex front, but assured us they had "tried everything") and still had to be induced 10 days after she was due. :(
Great, so go for a long walk, have sex and then eat Kraft Mac & Cheese and I bet that'll do it! :)
I've heard that playing/rubbing/whatever with your nipples can help stimulate labor.
Wasn't there an episode of friends about this? lol I think she ate spicy food, drank some kind of oil (I want to say castor oil but i could be totally wrong... lol), had sex, did the walking thing.
@daydreamwanderer: I know there's a chance that nothing will work, but it gives me hope and a distraction.
Thanks for all the suggestions. Keep them coming because I really want to try everything I can for a natural labor. I've also asked my Bradley instructor to look for some too. Once she gives me some ideas, I'll add them to the list. It may be a while though.
@TheFutureMcBride: Well and better to feel/be proactive than not, right? It's not as if any of those things would be harmful to Wombat! (Well, maybe the friends thing about drinking castor oil!)
There's a restaurant somewhere in one of the southern states that makes eggplant parmesian that made it to Good Morning America because pregnant women go there ALL THE TIME to eat it and it "induces" labor.
Now, I know you aren't in the South (and besides, I can't remember the restaurant, let alone the state) but it's worth a try. If you can stand eggplant parmesian, lol.
I'd recommend getting it from a restaurant, instead of the frozen food aisle, simple because it'd have a better chance of being authentic and labor-inducing compared to something that's been processed.
good luck!!!!!
@daydreamwanderer: fwiw, castor oil did NOTHING for me (one more reason I despise my cousin....), didn't even induce what it's supposed to cause. (It's too gross to even comment on here, lol).
@daydreamwanderer: Exactly! We just want a say in how Wombat is brought into this world. They're letting us have it, but they really don't want me to go past 39 weeks.
@Zinzerena: Hum, I'll tell my husband to make some because I do actually like it. I'm going to try to Google this restaurant. Maybe they'll ship it to me as I don't want to go into labor far away from my doctors.
Personally, I wouldn't do the castor oil; I've heard some horror stories about it! Let's see:
Also, not everyone is ok with this, but I had my membranes stripped at 37 and 38 weeks. I went into labor at 39 weeks, a few hours before my next appointmnet where my doctor would've stripped my membranes again. I was dialating at 37 weeks, so my doctor said my body was already preparing for labor and stripping my membranes would just help it along.
@TheFutureMcBride: good luck!!! and I hope it works!
0h, I just googled it!!!! Here's the article I found: http://www.wchstv.com/gmarecipes/eggplantparmigian.shtml
I can't STAND it (of course, I also tried a frozen brand... YUCK!) but I'd be willing to try it again if my FI made it, lol. I'm soooo gonna keep this around for my next pregnancy! LOL!
If you try it, let me know if it works? please?!?!?!?
eta: the article includes the recipe they use! Pretty sure they probably left out something "secret" as most chefs have their own "secret" ingredient, lol, but it's still worth trying, right?
I was due July 17 and my birthday is July 10. I had gone out to dinner on July 9 to celebrate my birthday with some friends. I had a craving for Olive Garden so that is where we went. I had always heard that eggplant parmesan is known to induce labor. The next day, on my birthday, I was in Target getting a new shirt for my birthday dinner reservations with my family, and my water broke!!!! I cancelled my reservations in between contractions. My child was born on my birthday!!! I don't know if it is true or had anything to due with my labor, but it worked out for me!!! Good luck!!
You guys are awesome! Thanks. I never thought this many people would have ideas.
Thanks for looking up the recipe @Zinzerena: I'll totally let you know, but I'm not due until July 25 if I go all the way to the end, so it'll be a while before I know if it works.
Not to be a Debbie Downer.. but let baby cook until he's done. He won't stay in there forever, and trying to evict him early could have serious consequences.. even with good intentions.
As for things that work: dehydration, uti's, diarrhea (or anything that causes it), nipple stimulation, sex..
Aside from sex, the others can cause erradic long contractions that can cause your baby serious stress and death.
A medically supervised induction where they are watching your little one's heart rate and your contraction pattern is your safest bet.
@TheFutureMcBride: I'm willing to wait! I'm not even pregnant yet, though we're hoping to concieve in the next couple months. :)
I was induced with my son, and yeah, it was NO fun at all. My daughter was a preemie by 4-5 weeks (the dr's couldn't decide....) and needed surfactant and I WISH I'd been given the option that you've got with the steriods. Especially if they're going to test prior to giving it (something I'd ask about, personally. The didn't do that with my daughter, which I really regret. I plan on doing that with the next baby, though).
If you ever wanna chat, feel free to PM me!!! :)
eta: I could so give you one heck of a horror story about being induced (MINE) but I won't 'cause I don't wanna freak out anyone here. Same for the "self-inducing". If she's at 39 weeks, I'd say go for it, especially if they're already planning on doing it at the hospital.
If you're worried, hun, talk to your DR about "self inducing". He'll tell you if it's a rotten idea, but I bet he won't, cause the moment your labor starts and you get to the hospital, they'll hook you up IMMEDIATLY to check the contractions, heartbeat, etc.
good luck!!!!
I've heard crazy things, from strenuous house cleaning to... well, doing what got you pregnant in the first place :P
oh, yeah, and I REFUSE to EVER be induced again. Not by a hospital anyway.
do what you feel best and what your doctor says is okay. :)
@bohonurse: If you read, since my first baby passed at week 34, I'll be monitored so often that the doctors will be some of my best friends. Also, I'm talking to the doctors before I do anything, but they don't want my Wombat to wait until the end of pregnancy. They want my baby out at week 37. I'm not doing anything until week 38 because they'll induce me at week 39. It's all doctors' orders, one of which is a High Risk Doctor who's dealt with this stuff for 30 years. Plus, if you read about medical inductions, they can cause the baby serious problems and death as well. It's a no win situation. I'm just trying to do the natural things like walk, sex, nipple stimulation, eating different things. There will be no dehydration, utis, etc.
Avoid nipple stimulation.. that's one of the most dangerous.
If they do medically induce, go for Cervadil over Cytotec.. I've seen 4 ruptured uterus' in my career that I'm confident were caused by Cytotec. I'm a labor and delivery nurse, so I'm fully aware of everything that comes with medical inductions, as well as the sad, grave outcomes of people attempting to induce at home. We have patients brought in all the time with full-term fetal demises due to self-induction.
Sorry, these posts always just hit a nerve. The moms are always hysterical saying, no one told me this could happen. It's sad..
I tried everything when I went 12 days over due with both of my children. Spicy food, strenuous house cleaning, walking, castor oil, etc. For some reason, my babies were quite happy where they were and didn't want to come out.
My best friend is at 32 weeks, and was told by her doctor not to get a pedicure at this point. Apparently some sort of stimulation around a certain spot on the ankle can induce labor.
@bohonurse: Like I said, I'm not doing anything without talking to my doctor first. All the things I've asked so far, they're comfortable with. This thread is not meant for just anyone which is why I put that I'll be monitored heavily because I've had a fetal demise. I don't recommend just anyone trying stuff because they're tired of being pregnant.
@Jenn23: I second this. We had sex and it kick started my labor and I had my lil munchkin that next day!
I've heard sex and spicy foods.
My mom and I were joking this weekend about how after I'd graduated college and moved home during my job search, she took me to Taco Bell and gave me a 6 month deadline to find a job and move. I always jokingly retold it that she took me to Taco Bell and kicked me out.
I said I'd do the same with the baby if he didn't come in due time...we'd go to Taco Bell and put hot sauce on everything and tell him to get out. :)
I had acupuncture "induction" (really it's just preparing your body somehow, and they say it'll work within 3 days or something) and my baby was OUT less than 12 hours later! Fully natural labor, just a few minutes over 5 hours total. Not sure if the acupuncture had anything to do with it, but I was impressed :-) Good luck with whatever you decide to do!!!
@TheFutureMcBride: You're lucky to have such great dr's. :) I'll be changing with my next pregnancy.
At least now you have a nice long list of things to ask the dr's next time you go! :D Don't forget to take a pen so you can mark off the "no's" and check/circle the "yes's"!
@bluebell: I've heard a lot of good things about that.
@Zinzerena: We actually switched from the doctor we had with Moose to new ones. They are amazing and spend all kinds of time answering my crazy questions.
@missfireslayer: You always have my back. Thanks! And yes, you're right. Everything will be asked of the HRD and I'll come back and tell everyone what he says.
@TheFutureMcBride:Idk why but I think I get a little bit protective of you? Creepy.... just a little :) P.s. Update your blog already!
I knew a girl for a while that said her mom was just tired of being pregnant towards the end. To get her to pop out, her mom had her dad take her slowly around the neighborhood on his Harley! Apparently it worked, lol.
@ScooterBride: oh my gosh, I bet that was quite the thing to see haha
For what it's worth, my doctors recommended the acupuncture induction so as to try to avoid medical induction since I was already past my due date. Obviously your situation is different and your doctors are clearly in a better position to determine whether it's right for you, but just wanted to put it out there that I wasn't some renegade trying whatever I heard might work. (not really directed at you futuremcbride :-) ) That said - I highly recommend that anyone facing medical induction first try ASKING your doctor about it!
@TheFutureMcBride: If I lived where you do (or even close enough to count!) I'd totally steal your dr.!
and am I the only one questioning why someone would create an account to just make a comment like the "nurse" above? Especially AFTER our dear Momma Wombat's original detailed post??? (and I mean that lovingly!!!!)
