I took 5 kittens (5 months) to be spayed/neutered and vaccinated last Saturday. All came through with flying colors, except one - Mooey. Poor little girl started vomiting right after surgery and into the next day. I had to assist feed and she seemed to improve greatly. This morning I noticed she was not as lively and did not eat much. I soon found out why - her incision site is inflamed and leaking blood-tinged yellow discharge. I immediately called the vet and he called in a script for antibiotics. Unfortunately, besides the fact she hates it, the antibiotics are apparently making her vomit. Naturally I am calling the vet first thing in the morning, but I have a final exam in the morning that I must administer since I have not been able to get ahold of anyone to cover for me. I am frantic with worry! Prayers, healing energies or positive vibes would be very much appreciated! Thank you!

Oh poor monkey! Sending happy thoughts your way. Keep her hydrated as best you can, even if you have a little needless syringe and can squirt some in her it would really help. I hope she feels better soon!

I'm very sorry, I hope it's just a minor infection that'll clear up and not life threatening. I am sending lots of good thoughts her way. Also I'd like to kiss her little pink feet, so cute.

Poor kitty!  I'm sure that she will feel better as the antibiotics take effect.  Take care of the little sweetie!

Well the vet did not call back right away so I started her on two homeopathic remedies because I had to do SOMETHING. I was pleasantly surprised when I got up this morning and I saw the sparkle back in her eyes! She had more energy and ate her breakfast. The incision site still looks bad, but there is less discharge now.

When the vet finally called, he said to cut the prescribed dose in half and give it after she eats. If she still can not tolerate this antibiotic, he said we can try another one. As a last resort, I can take her in for daily antibiotic injections. Good thing I have the next 3 and 1/2 weeks off!

That's great news. Out of curiosity, what homeopathic therapies did you use? I have two kitties myself but don't know anything about home remedies.

@meliss: Pyrogenium 200C and Calendula 200C. Pyrogenium is for "septic states" like abscesses, dissecting wounds, etc. It is the homeopathic antiseptic. It is especially useful for pelvic infections,

Calendula has many uses. It promates rapid healing of wounds, but should not be used topically unless the wound is clean. Used internally, it is ok to use in a case like this.

Homeopathy is a complicated form of medicine. We consult with a veternairy homeopath who teaches for the British Institute of Homeopathy. It is also the world's most frequently used form of medicine. Many people believe it is a scam, yet billions of people continue to use it. It cured me of a MRSA when 5 antibiotics did nothing. Western medicine hates it and claims a placebo effect - yet I use it often with the ferals, in their drinking water and they do not even know they are being medicated! I have seen some brillant results but complicated cases are best left to the professionals. A good beginner book is "Homeopathic First Aid for Animals: Tales and Techniques from a County Pracitioner" by K. Walker.

I should add that we have a "regular" vet, a vet we use for spay/neuters, a holistic vet, a veternairy homeopath and have even used a chiropractor on occasion. Taking care of 45+ cats can be tricky at times!

@meliss: I run a cat sanctuary where it took me years to get all the dumped cats and ferals trapped for neutering and vaccination. It is a living memorial to my daughter and only child who died unexpectedly 9 years ago. I spend $400 a month just on cat food! I DO live in a rather remote area, surroubded by thousands of acres of woods.

@bakerella: Yes she is slowly improving. This is without antibiotic as even a half dose made her vomit. I can relate as most antibiotics make me violently ill. So I am relying solely on homeopathy at this point along with lots of rest. If she stops improving or gets worse, then we will simply have to go for the daily antibiotic injections. I saw no discharge at all today and the color of the incision site is gradually returning to a more normal color. I am very thankful to be able to consult with a most gifted homeopath whose knowledge far surpasses mine.

I have her isolated in the study and today is the first day she felt well enough to want OUT. Of course mean "Meowmie" said no. She knows how to use the basement cat door and would go rushing outside and no doubt see a bird or squirrel and go tree hopping. These are country cats not pampered pussycats; the nearest dirt road from the house is over 1/2 mile away so the whole outdoors is their playground. So I am making sure she is 100% before she gets released.

Here's a pic I just took with my cell phone. I gotta figure out how to adjust the camera settings!

Awesome! Thanks for the update! You know, I never thought of using homeopathic remedies on a cat even though I see a naturopath and have used homeopathics myself. Smart lady!

@bluespurrs: Glad to hear she's doing better. I agree with @Bakerella, that's a beautiful tribute for your daughter. I often think I wish I had the time, energy and money to help every homeless animal; but often I can't more than donations to local rescues. You're my hero for what you're doing for these cats.

Mooey continues to improve. She is eating well, using the litter box regularly and definitely wants out. I bring her sister into the room at night to keep her company because she seems lonely. No discharge at all now, but the incsion area still looks weak to me so I am keeping her in the room at least until Christmas and maybe longer if need be. We have been bringing into the living room for a bit for supervised visits and a change of scenery. Thanks for the prayers and well wishes!
