Hi girls… okay im going to do my best to make this short. Me and my fiance got engaged in June. Were away on vacation and came back in July to start planning our wedding. Last week we had our engagement party and announced the date and venue we had finally decided on… The Berkeley Church (toronto spot) … as were phoning our videographers to find out their avilability they tell us a shaddy story about another couple who they worked with who got totally screwed over by the Berkeley and are now in court with them! AHHH scary! we were supposed to put our deposit down tommorow…
so me and the fI talk last night and start calculating costs of everything… at the Berkeley our wedding would come to around 50k. We may or may not owe money at the end depending on how generous our guests are with gifts…. we loved this sport because its not a banquet hall….the food was amazing….byob… http://www.berkeleyevents.com/Spaces.Church.php
its downtown toronto which we love. its exclusive and our band would rock out the stage! cons are the parking (none…only lots for $$)…. the 1 bad warning we recieved from the vendor …. its a bit of a bad area… oh and we would have to get married in a church because my FI doesnt like the indoor ceremony area
and the second venue… Royal Ambassador (http://www.theroyalambassador.com/) is in Caledon (40 mins away from toronto)… its a banquet hall with 3 other weddings happening…. banquet style food…. it can have a beautiful outdoor ceremony…. and the kicker….our fiancee’s mother is offering to front the entire bill for this venue.
please tell me what u would do…

What made the first venue trump the second in the first place? Are there any restrictions on the second venue that means you would have to compromise anything? From what you’ve described, the second venue (Royal Ambassador) sounds way better for you financially and ceremony-wise.

The reason why we loved the Berkeley was because we wanted our guests to have a non-traditional reception in a unique spot with some awesome food. Not many of our guests live in toronto and we wanted to showcase what we love about the city – the eclecticness and diversity and the edginess to the location. Theyre pricing is also the same as the royal ambassador. both venues cost us 20k.
The second venue the only compromise is the quality of food….(were both big foodies) and sharing my day with other brides… which is the main reason why we both dont like banquet halls very much….
Update: my FI just got off phone with mom and were not sure if her offer to cover the venue cost stands anymore…. which we honestly understand, but she had offered it before but im just not sure its there anymore. they will likely help us with a large portion of it …regardless of any venue we choose. same with my parents. so it looks like the choice is up to us.

The Berkeley is gorgeous, has good food, and is in Toronto. Maybe try to find some reviews online to make yourself feel better…I think it is the better choice!

It’s a bad idea to count on ANY monetary wedding gifts to get you out of debt. Financially, the second one makes sense. And nobody will care about being in the city if they have to either pay a fortune to park or risk getting mugged while they walk to your venue. Just my two cents….

@peachacid: Have you been?? can you give me more details please…yes we tried the food and loved it … the problem is another vendor called us and told us to not book there because a client had huge problems with them regarding a dbl booking…
so far they have been excellent with us…. we are scheduled to visit them tommorow…. to give the deposit. our planner is comming with us…. should we go and air out our concerns and see what they say>?

@MrsPeachMartini: 🙁 nobody has been mugged comming from a wedding, its on a big busy street in toronto…its just as anywhere in the city, theres some homeless people with MHA…. im not too concerned about it…its a popular venue and countless weddings have taken place there

Just curious – did you + your FI end up booking at the Berkeley? I absolutely love the B.C. One of the coolest venues in Toronto for sure!
