Do people realize how incredibly freakin' rude it is to say this?
At least a dozen times over the past year or so, people who have met me and FI, or who have seen a picture say this. A co-worker said it to me last night and I nearly lost my sh*t. And this comment is always followed up by, "ohhh that's weird that you're getting married." Oh, thanks a lot.
FI and I are both tall and have dark hair. That's where the similarities end IMO. He has a big nose, I have a small one. He has brown puppy dog eyes and I have almond shaped green eyes. I could go on and on. I always thought we made a "good-looking" couple, but I don't think we appear related.
Has anyone else ever been told this?
That is so weird! I don't understand what would possess someone to say that!!!!
Um, yeah that's really strange! Why would anyone think that's okay to say?!
People say this about me and my fiance as well. We have similar bone structure (i.e. noses and cheek bones) and build, but I'm blond and blue eyed and he's dark haired and brown eyed. I don't think we look related at all, but apparently some people think so and feel to the need to let us know. I think we look good together because we "fit" but I've never thought we looked thaaat much alike!
Weird! I had a friend try to explain Nip/Tuck to me and the FH once and he went on and on about how me and FH could actually be bro and sis. It was kind of gross. I don't know why ANYONE would think that's an appropriate thing to say!
You should just throw it back at them and say, "oh, we're first cousins, but that's allowed in this state and studies show it has no genetic consequences." (Because it is in most states.) See what they say. :-D
I'm not sure I would call it rude, but it's weird. I had a friend say that about FI and I, because we both have light brown hair and very blue eyes, and my response was just, "yeah, I know, it's how I know our kids will be incredibly cute."
Don't sweat it, you sound like a very good looking couple.
That is SO RUDE!! I agree with edb, you will definitely have good-lookin' babies!!! :)
Omg, what is wrong with people? I am always always amazed at the crap people think its ok to say out loud! I'm sure you don't look alike, they probably are noticing that you guys look good together but that's their awkward attempt at saying it. People can be so strange!
I get that all the time! I just look at the person who said it like they are stupid and say "ok??" in a very sarcastic way. The they usually mumble something incohearent and walk away, lol. Just dont let it get to you gorgeous!
Yeah, that's weird!!! Why would you say that to someone??
Reminds me of once when I was out to dinner with my dad, and someone thought we were on a date!!!!!!!! ugh. Equally as creepy!!! LOL
I got this a lot with one of my exes. He actually did look like my real brother so it kinda made sense but still, it's not a nice thing to say.
I get this all the time. People don't know if I look like my brother more (only a yr apart and everyone always thought we were twins) or my FI. I usually just joke and say, "well we know what our kids will look like".
Ok that is VERY rude. I think it about people all the time though. I'll look at wedding blogs and photos and thing "wow...they look eerily similar to one another." But I'd never say it out loud! Some people just have no idea...
we've gotten this too. we're both dark haired, dark eyed, light skinned, mexican. its wierd but i dont really care what people say.
Ok. I have to admite. My FI and I really do look like brother and sister. We are the same height, same build, Same hair color and skin tone. We have had people who did not know us well actually ask if we were brother and sister. It is odd to think about, but we chalk it up to our genetics sparking part of our attraction. We are from different ethnicities (he is Polish and Irish, I am French Canadien and Acadien) and different backgrounds, but we just happen to look alike. It's true, at least we know we will have cute kids.
We've gotten this too - it is so annoying! Really we are just two blonde hair blue eyes people but people are rude.
Scientists say we choose mates that have similarities so that our children will look like us so it isn't surprising that so many couples get these comments but it is surprising that people say it!
Ignorance is bliss!
I have known couples that look related... but I would never, ever tell them that! Tact people! Do you has it? :-)
I can't believe that someone would say that to you! I once had my MIL come with me to a surgery and I guess people thought that I looked like her because when she talked about her son, they said 'oh your brother?' to me. And I was like 'ummm noooo'.
OMG! So rude! I can't believe people would say that! FI and I look nothing alike. He's got blond-brown hair and blue eyes and I'm dark haired and dark green-brown eyes. But you never know what people might say!
Yes. Someone said this to us at our engagement party. I don't remember who said it, but it was a little bit strange. I guess we're both of medium height, a little fat, and pale. But we have different hair colors and different eye colors.. and different facial features... I didn't really know what to say when they told me that.
What a bizarre comment to say, I would never in a million years say that to someone (even if I was thinking it!)
How rude.
We get this ALL the dang time. The only similarites we have is our faces are both oval shaped. He has blue eyes i have green. He has red hair i have brown. Hello?! how is that the same? I actually got the comment " Well at least you know when you have kids they will look like you!" Grr. That one made me mad.
So rude! What happened to good manners? It seem people are not polite anymore, so sad.
I don't think the "you look like brother/sister comment would bother me ... but the second part that she said really would bother me!! I mean, it's on thing to say you look alike but a total other to say that it's weird that you're getting married, then!
My parents have similar facial features but I don't think anyone noticed until I was born because I look like BOTH of them! So ... I would definitely say we tend to choose people who are similar appearing to us in one way or another.
My Grandma said this to me the first time she met FI. Seriously, she said we looked like brother and sister. I have no idea where she got it from. We're both tall and a bit gangly, with brown hair, but that's it. I have brown eyes, he has blue, I have a round face, he has an angular face, I have a small nose, his is big. I couldn't believe she said this, I was shocked. No one hs ever said this again, but it was the fact that it was my grandmother that said it that really shocked me.
If it makes you feel better - when I am out with my brother, people constantly tell us that we make a cute couple! Now that is YUCKY!! I think it is because I am fair with blonde hair and green eyes and he has olive skin with brown hair and brown eyes! Trust me - we do not act like we are a couple!
I think that's weird and rude. My husband and I have been told we look alike several times... which makes no sense considering is a foot taller than me, anbout 100 pounds heavier, has brown hair versus my blonde, and we have completely different skin coloring and facial features. Sometimes I think people have no filter. Seriously.
@gilneas - you do not look like brother and sister, come on!
My FI and I have gotten this too. I have dark hair and eyes, and he is a blue eyed blond. I guess we both have defined bone structures, but seriously. I was very embarassed when I was told that. People say rude things all the time without thinking!
I was in this dress boutique on 9th street and the girl behind the counter just totally assumed that we were bro and sis. I didnt correct her becuse I didnt want it to be weird, but we left the store holding hands! lol.
I get the same thing. NOT COOL people. Not cool. Sorry you have to deal with it. I just glare and say "That's not funny". People usually get the point. ;)
I've never said this to a couple except for two of my best friends in the entire world, who are married. They are like brother and sister to me and they seriously look alike. They think it's funny and aren't bothered by it, which is the only reason we joke about it. But I wouldn't say it to anyone else. HOWEVER, have you ever noticed how many couples either DO look a lot alike or are polar opposites of each other? Again, not saying it's acceptable to comment, but it's something I notice a lot (and keep to myself).
No one has ever said that to me about my fiance, but I did have an ex that people would say that about. Also, whenever I am out with my brother people assume that we are dating. EW.
That's a rude thing to say. How would it be weird if you like someone that looked similar to you anyway? It's not as if they really ARE your brother! We've never had this comment, we look quite different.
@honeybun: I had a friend and the waitress thought his sister was his date and he said "Ew! That's my sister! Didn't you notice how we look exactly alike?!" I think the waitress was embarrassed after that, hahahaha.
Yes, that is a super-icky thing to say!!
That is one thing that I guess my fiance and I will never have to worry about. *cackles*
My mother said that about FI and I when she first saw a picture of us together. I just alughed it off, but thought it was really rude!
My ex and I looked alike, but hubs and I don't. His hair is darker brown than mine, I have blue eyes his is green, he's all freckly and I'm not, he's got a big nose and I have a little one. We're both tall, but he's got a broad build and I'm thin.
I think it is kind of creepy that people would say that if they know you are a couple - do they really think a brother and sister would get married??? Or maybe they're tryingh to say you should check to make sure your not related??? Whatever the reason, just give them a weird look and walk away
OMG! People say this about my husband and I ALL. THE. TIME!!!! I used to just laugh it off, but it really gets annoying. My husband gets pretty annoyed with it to. He actually has two sisters and I look nothing like either of them (except that we're all tall). I've always thought it was the strangest thing for someone to say, especially directly after we're introduced as boyfriend/girlfriend, or now, husband/wife.
