We didn't use everything right away because we were moving and wanted to keep things in original packaging.  But I would have otherwise!

We're using what we what we need right now, but not all of it because the kitchen in our apartment isn't finished yet.

    But I think it's just fine :)

It depends.  We didn't have a shower per se, but we have gotten a few early gifts.  We've used some things like the pizza stone, but we left bigger things like the vacuum in the box.  And the china has stayed packed up because we're moving soon and we figured the manufacture's packing is probably better than whatever we would come up with, lol.

It also depended on who it was from. The stuff from his parents and my parents we decided we could use because they knew we didn't have anything to start off with.

A lot of it depends on who it's from, like I know my great aunts would be more traditional and we're waiting on their gifts.

I'll use some of it right away, but not all. We registered for some stuff, like pots and pans, that we plan to return and re-buy. Okay, that sounds confusing: we found a pots and pans set at BB&B that we like, but the whole set was like $800, so we registered for all the pots in it separately, since one pot is in our guests' price range. But since the whole set together is cheaper, we hope to receive all the pots, return them, and then buy the set instead. Maybe even with our registry completion discount! Then use the leftover cash (if there is any) for something else.

Hmm.... okay, that looks way shadier typed out than it did in my head. :/

@DayDream - I would have done the same thing!  I realized after we'd already opened our KitchenAid Mixer that there was no way my Uncle would have used a coupon from BBB on it, and I wish we'd returned it, taken the cash, and rebought the mixer and had the extra $60.  And I feel shady wishing that too!

We already live together - not much really "changed" after the wedding.  So we saved all of our gifts from the shower to use after the wedding, so we had something new and different to look forward to.  But we have a very established household, so a lot of our registry items were upgrades.

Well, after my shower, my mom took all the gifts back to her house so I wouldn't have to pack it all when we move, so I'm currently not using any of them. Of course, she also said it was bad luck or something, but I'm pretty sure she was just making that  up.

I used them!!!! Plus, I didn't want to have 20+ some boxes to unpack after the wedding, in addition to wedding gifts.

We aren't using anything until after the wedding.  We want to assess what we have and what we still need and return if necessary.

@DayDream - we're doing the same sort of thing.  At Crate and Barrel, buying 4 place settings together is cheaper than each guest buying a place setting.  So we're going to return the individual place settings and get the 4-piece place setting for cheaper then use the extra $ for something else.

I had my shower yesterday and got many wonderful things! I already started burning the candles we got and took all the appliances out of the box and ready to use!

This is going to be a hard one! I obviously haven't had my shower yet but I can see this as being a problem. I'm thinking that if I unwrap them at the shower but then put them away till after the wedding I'll get to enjoy opening them again after the wedding. Kinda like buying summer clothes on clearance and then puttting them away till the next year and getting to enjoy that new clothes feeling twice!

I've waited to use everything.  Not for any superstitious reason.  Just because we're moving at the end of the summer, so I'd rather wait until we have a new place to start using the new things.  Everything we've gotten is replacing things we have right now, so we're not in dire need of any of it... yet!

We're moving two weeks before the wedding and hoping to start our new kitchen with all the new things so we're waiting.  But many of the engagement gifts that we received 18 months ago we've started using.  I think we'd probably start using things if we weren't moving.

I think it makes sense to return a place setting or individually bought pots and pans for the entire set.  (The store is still going to make money on what you bought... and if the cost is prohibitive for an item to be purchased in a set it does make sense that you would ask for the pieces.)  I don't think it's a shady idea...  I think it's smart!  (After all you are the one who will be directing your guests to their store to shop.

Not shady at all- most folks would give you kudos for getting the most out of your money.  My son can hardly wait to get his kitchen stuff on the 22nd-  um... chances are that he won't wait to use it- he's been craving Cajun dirty rice.

I didn't for logistical reasons and it was a blessing in disguise. I only received about half of my everyday dishes as gifts and a few months ago they got discontinued. Because I haven't used anything I was able to return everything I got already with no problems. But for stuff you don't have to worry about that happening with, like you got the whole set or it's just a sigular item, I would have used as soon as I got them.

We're using things. We already live together and I was just too excited :)

We did just decide, however, that we're moving at the end of the summer, so I'll probably leave a lot more in boxes now that I know I'll have to pack it up again.
