lol I have never thought about it before!
If its grammatically correct, Im all about it! lol
By or accidentally. I was one of the few who stayed awake in English class when I was younger.
I say accidentally I think, but I know I say "on accident" too. Truthfully this doesn't really bother me. The whole "on purpose" "on accident" hypothesis seems like a possibility I guess. I *think* people here say accidentally or "on accident".
I think I say "on." I'm from rural East Texas, so a lot of things I say are regional.
btw I don't think this has anything to do with who has better grammar than whom. Language evolves constantly and regionalism comes into play as well.
all? haha I usually say "accidently" but I don't know about the other two options...I am going to have to listen and watch myself (and others around me) and see!
Um...I use whatever I end up using! I think I've actually used all 3! lol.
by accident.
One time i was told that it was ridiculous that i asked someone if they wanted to "have a catch" instead of play catch. Maybe it's a PA thing?
I say on accident - I had to say all of them in a sentance just to figure out how I say it:) Maybe's it's regional - I'm from the midwest.
I say all three depending on the situation. I guess I'm weird like that! I know I have definitely said both before, and I don't know if it really depends on the situation or just whatever comes out of my mouth!
How about "close the light" vs. "turn off the light"? That one used to drive my parents bonkers, so now out of rebellion I still always say "Close the light". It drives my partner bonkers now. I can't even stop it! (and I think it's funny, even if it's wrong :)
Oooh. I say either... I don't know why!
And I have heard people say close the light and it drives me bonkers too, DG! Lol.
@Mrs. DG - That would be right in french :) A lot of the french people I know say it like that in english since it's the direct translation!
Ah, so I'm sophisticated!!! Awesome Ottawa! "ferme la lumiere", right?
I say accidentally because I was raised by a bunch of grammar snobs :)
i always say "accidentally" or, very occasionally, "by accident".
Melissabegins: what exactly were you describing as a "PA thing"? i'm from PA and have relatives in central (redneck PA), Pittsburgh, the northern coal regions, my homeland is south-central (capitol area) PA, and i'm in Philadelphia for school. this has taught me that there is no such thing as a linguistically/grammatically "PA thing", haha. the grammar, phrases, and accents in each region are SO different, it's amazing! lol

I've noticed here on the boards and also on tv that people use "on accident" a lot. (For anywone who watches General Hospital, Lulu says its ALL the time and it drives me crazy! lol.) I've grown up always using and hearing "by accident" so on accident just sounds so weird and wrong to me. I was curious if it was maybe a regional thing, so I looked it up and came across this:

So ladies, which do you prefer? What's influenced your choice?
