FI and I got engaged this past weekend (story here.)  The last couple of days have been so wonderful as we have gotten to talk w/ family and friends share our story and hear how happy they are for us.  HOWEVER with all of these phone calls we have gotten tons of questions questions questions - To which we don’t have any answers!

Since it is 12/15 and the only answer we have is a date 10/10/2010 – we are thinking we’ll dive into the planning journey after New Years…

Is that ok?  I mean can we take 2 weeks to enjoy these engagement moments?  Are we jinxing ourselves by not beginning straight away?

Nooo you still have plenty of time!  Enjoy your engagement moments, and "dive in" when you are ready to start planning! :)

Enjoy your newly acquired status for a while, there's nothing wrong with that. FI and I got engaged before Thanksgiving and that's been my answer to questions "We're just enjoying ourselves right now, we'll start worrying about the details after the new year"

You can definitely take those 2 weeks off. But remember, this is PEAK time for engagements, so everyone is going to start booking stuff at the same time you are. I'd at least get an idea of what vendors you want to use. Maybe set up appointments now for after the new year. Other than that, you absolutely have time :)

Start when you are ready!!  The only thing you may have to be flexible with is that date being booked by venues and vendors (because of the 10-10-10 popularity) - but, there should be plenty of options available (and I don't think a few weeks is really going to hurt you at this point)!

Oh yeah, EAQ brings up a good point... you are picking a very popular date!  After your two weeks I would also recommend calling your major vendors to reserve your date.

YES.  PLEASE TAKE THIS TIME TO ENJOY YOUR ENGAGEMENT!!!!

And tell people to BACK OFF!!!

I was SO taken aback by how many detailed questions we got literally the second we announced our engagement.  What were our dates (hello we can't pick a date until we find an available VENUE) our colors (wtf? we need colors?) guest list (ummm I'll get back to you) photographer (no seriously we JUST got engaged) bridesmaids dresses, etc etc. etc.

We didn't get ANY chance to enjoy engaged bliss because we jumped into wedding planning right away.  And, well, wedding planning led to quite a few fights and... well... there went the engagement bliss Frown

@ oracle - you know its so funny you say that - A number of people we have told have said the same thing. Its a Sunday and we're Jewish so I am keeping my fingers crossed the venue options we have aren't booked OY VEY !?!?!?!?

I feel like I could have written this post!  I feel the same way :)  I got engaged a couple weeks ago and the first question I was asked with every phone call was "when is it??"  I don't know yet!  Glad to know I'm not the only one trying to figure out how soon I have to do things... Though as others have pointed out, with lots of people getting engaged around now, it's probably a good idea to start the planning soon.

We got engaged at Christmas and I knew we had to get our venue first so that we could officially pick a date.  Plus, I also knew that tons of peeps would be doing the same thing shortly after the holidays.    After we booked our venue, I did NOTHING else wedding related for a solid 6 months.  Keep in mind I was engaged for 23 months though...

Take your time.  Work out what is important to you on your own schedule and remember this is YOUR engagement.  Make it your own...it doesn't matter what anyone else does or expects of you

    Congrats! and Happy Planning!

I say enjoy engaged bliss...you're REALLY preparing for marriage, not just a wedding.  And there's nothing like wedding planning that can put pressure on a relationship!  Take your time, enjoy each other - that's the most important part.

Like @Frugalista, @oracle & @MrsKtobe said, YOU dictate your own schedule.  When you're ready, discuss what kind of wedding you both want, what "feeling/style" you want, & plan from there.

Congrats on your engagement! (no questions attached!)

I think that you will be fine since you are getting married after the wedding season.  You should start looking for venues and photographers first thing next year though.  Those are the things that book up pretty far out and the most important things too!
