I think it’s nice when professors want to know their students better and totally makes sense considering that you’re in social work. I like when they see each student as an individual and treat them as that, whatever their situation may be. Maybe she just wants you to know that she’s interested in you as a person and not just as Student #2893?

When I was a TA I did enjoy getting to know my students, one of them is coming to my wedding!

@Jamie42003:  I’m sorry your going through a rough patch.

I work at a university now, and the program is very tight. If the professors do not get to know a student, they have a hard time bringing up issues or feeling comfortable discussing suggestions to them. Even I feel a bit intrusive when I talk to a student I dont know. I wouldn’t take it personally, and you really do not need to act on her want to get to know you if you dont want to. I was like this in college too.

I guess, what I am trying to say is that she was trying to be polite and include you. If you want to start a relationship with the faculty member (and it might be helpful down the word for recommendation letters), then sit down and have a friendly talk. If you dont, then keep on keeping on. Just polietly explain that you are busy.

I’ve noticed a lot of SOCW professors try to have therapy sessions with students. I really get tired of journaling or talking about feelings.

I don’t think you’re a weirdo at all! I was never extremely buddy buddy with my professors outside of class and believe that things worked out just fine that way. I’m a quiet person too so I feel your pain in that regard. But no worries! You’re not the only one! 🙂

I always think the kids who get buddy buddy with the professors are a little weird, honestly. I like my distance!

Im sorry you are dealing with this! it sounds all to familiar,as i am going through almost the same thing. I had a prof. call me out in the middle of class on my absences, 2 days after i visited him to talk about everything that is going on. (i have been in and out of the hospital for the past 9 mths, with stomach issues, i have drs. appts 2 times a week and i have to go when they can get me in) anyways i feel for you.

PM me anytime you need someone to vent to:)
