For Mother’s Day (and his nephew’s 1st birthday!) SO travelled to the midwest while I stayed in DC with my family (which is where we drive to from PA whenever he flies). Of course because it was a family affair I was faced with many “6 years and no ring?!?” discussions. Ah well, I’m used to it.
Anyway, we were driving back to PA last night and we passed through Harrisburg. Usually I’m the one hypnotized by those e-ring ads and billboards but I was stuck on Candy Crush and my iPhone so I wasn’t really paying attention this time. Out of a slightly silent trip I heard him say, “That’s a nice one”. I was thinking he was talking about a car but there weren’t any sports or muscle cars that would normally interest him so I just looked at him and said “Uh, which one?” and he said “That ‘Simon G.’ ring”? Cue the O_O expression. It was a round solitaire with a halo (it’s probably on the ads they post on the website, haven’t checked) and I told him “Well, I like the style, and if the middle was blue then I’d be interested but ehhh, not really a Simon G. fan.”
Then he asked what I like about Tacori so much. I told him (and he knows about everything else I love) that I love the detail of where the stone sits. I googled a pic of a side view of a Dantela and pointed it out, he said “That’s the setting, right? Yeah, that looks really cool.” Really fought to hide my huge grin at this point to keep the conversation casual and not scare him away from it! How has he been building up his ring vocabulary behind my back?!
THEN we start talking about stones. It kind of went like this:
Him: So… do you really want a 2.0ct sapphire?
Me: OF COURSE I want a sapphire. I don’t need a diamond.
Him: I know what kind you want, I’m asking because I was doing my own research and they measure them by millimeters because ovals have different qualities that make them look nice. Technically if you are looking at them by weight they only come in 1.5 and the next one up from that is 2.5.
(He starts drifting into his engineering terms and notices I’m getting extremely lost at this point.)
Him: Like, a 1.5 would be 6mm and a 2.0 would be 8mm
Me: You know I can’t visualize this.
Him: I figured… Soooo, Do you want to go look at stones together and then you pick, and then I’ll do the rest?
I gave him a casual “Yeah, that would be nice.” while in my mind and heart fireworks were going off!!! We’re planning on visiting to the Carribean during the first week of June, and it’s no surprise that I was hoping I would be coming back engaged… This reassures me that it won’t be happening and I can keep my expectations from ruining our trip. But wow, this big step forward is completely worth it!
