I am super bummed but I don’t think our original honeymoon plans (New Zealand/AUS) are going to work out. My FI is enrolling in a crazy busy graduate program and she’ll only get one week off in December (the week of Christmas). So it looks like the long, luxiourios honeymoon we had planned is probably a no-go.
Any ideas for a quick 7-10 honeymoon in December for people who (1) don’t like cold and (2) don’t care much for beaches/the tropics?

@hgwells: Well were are you located? How long of a plane ride are you willing to go on or are you willing to go on a plane at all?
I went to Kuai for my honeymoon and literally spent a total of three hours at the beach! There were so many hikes and other activities that kept my DH and I busy!

@Payless: We’re in Atlanta. Not afraid of a long plane ride (both travel veterans), but want to maximize the amount of time actually ON vacation.

@hgwells: wha kind of vacation do you want and what price range? Do you like exploring or just relaxing with some background noise? Do you WANT to travel someplace knew and off the mainland or are you okay with staying in the USA?
Northern Arizona is cold in the winter but is still VERY nice, Sedona would be my suggestion.
Off the mainland but still USA would be Kauai because even if it is tropic the place has so much more to offer than beaches
Egypt might be an interesting place to travel to, there are plenty of places there that could be fun and it is warm in the winter

@Payless: Thanks for the ideas! Our original honeymoon budget (when we thought we could do a long trip) was $10-12k. That seems excessive for something short, but that’s what’s available.
I think we’d prefer to go abroad, generally, but I’m not sure that there’s enough time for that. We like a mix of relaxing and exploring (but if I had to pick one, it’d be exploring).

@hgwells: I am not 100% sure but I don’t think Egypt is a long trip from where you are located and it is warm! Maybe talk to a travel agency because they are going to have the best advice for getting the most bang for your buck!
Yay! My DH and I are exploring souls and aren’t to fond of spending money just to lay around 🙂

Travel Nut here…
Honestly, a week is a short amount of time if you are considering visiting a different continent (altho that isn’t to say it isn’t do-able… just that usually if one goes that far they want 2 weeks)
Ten Days and you could do somewhere like Hawaii or a Destination City in Europe (London / Paris)… or in the USA… or a nice Island in the Caribbean (or a Cruise)
A Tropical Vacation, doesn’t necessarily have to include JUST the beach. You can spend your time sightseeing, and discovering Geography, History, Culture etc.
Personally, if I was in your shoes, I’d do something smaller now (less money) and then save up again, and have that mega trip to Australia / New Zealand back on the books in the not too distant future.
Hope this helps,

@hgwells: You should look into Costa Rica! We’re going in January as our winter is their “dry” season. There’s so much to do! We’re staying 3 nights in the Arenal Volcano regian, 2 nights in the Cloud Forest and 3 nights by the beach but you could totally skip the beach part or just stay in one place. There are hot springs, hikes, ziplines, river rafting, etc.
We fly from Los Angeles to Atlanta and then from Atlanta I think it’s only 4-5 hours to Costa Rica so it wouldn’t be a bad flight for you at all.
Our main draw was everything seems super affordable once you’re there!

We went to Ireland for 10 days between Dec-Jan for our honeymoon. The weather wasn’t warm, but it wasn’t awful– in the 50s most of the time we were there. We did a self-drive tour of the south and it was awesome. I highly recommend.
