My boyfriend and I had been planning on purchasing a ring for a while. I knew the store I wanted to purchase from as they had the best prices and have a good reputation.
Of course I was excited and had been “building” my ring over and over for a while on their online site. When we traveled to the actual store the diamond prices were MUCH different than those online. With our budget I thought we would be able to afford about a 1.6 and ended up with a 1.3
When I asked why their prices were so different online they said.. I don’t even know. It was confusing. It sounded like to basically have the lowest prices. However the seller said he never recommends ordering online because they have never seen the stones and don’t know their quality, etc
So me being naive left it at that. But now I’m thinking: You can buy the diamonds online MUCH cheaper and they are GIA and EGL certified. I could purchase a larger and better grade stone. I have a 30 day complete refund I could do on my ring (it won’t be here for another 2 weeks, I haven’t even seen it complete yet)
Here is the store’s website I purchashed from if you’re wondering: genesisdiamonds.com

@cls9q: I had a great experience buying my diamond from James Allen where you can see magnified images of any diamonds you are thinking of purchasing. They also have great customer service and are willing to help you with any queries you might have. (Also, they have a good return policy and a lifetime upgrade policy on all their diamonds.)
Before you make a decision about whether or not to return your ring, why dont you check out James Allen and see what the prices are for diamonds of comparable specs to the one you are getting? Other great online diamond vendors with very good customer reputations are: Blue Nile, Union Diamond, Adiamor. I would have bought from any of these vendors but choseJames Allen as i happened to find my perfect diamond within my budget at the right time there

@cls9q: I’m confused – is the online site Genesis Diamonds and its the same store that you went to with higher prices? Not a different store?
I’ve never heard of a seller with an online site having higher prices at their B&M shopfront store…. very strange

Yes. They have a store in Nashville and Louisville and a few other places. They are pretty well known here. I think it’s strange too!

@cls9q: Well maybe check out a few other online vendors and see what the prices are like. Have you already paid for your ring? If not, you might be able to negotiate a better price if you tell them what you get a comparable diamond for elsewhere.
A few jewellers I spoke to were willing to work on the price a bit to match what could be bought online. Some wont budge though, but other might really want your business.
Take a look at James Allen and Blue Nile etc and see what you think. They deliver to anywhere in US obviously and internationally too

Great experience with James allen, video of Diamond was spot on, even got me asset images and re inspected before my final decision. I saved roughly 45% on the diamond over brick and mortar. Setting was about 40% less.
Blue Nile has good prices but no real pictures before you buy so they were a no go for me.

@mr52: I went with James Allen and loved the whole experience, but I heard with Blue Nile that you can request magnified images and ASET images of diamonds you are interested in and they will get for you. I guess thats still not as easy as being able to view the images online for every diamond as James Allen does, but Blue Nile does have really competitive prices…..

@cls9q: I just purchased my loose diamond from James Allen, and it was a great experience. I ordered several stones, and they paid for return shipping too. You will pay a lot less for a much better stone online than a B&M store. Most stores carry EGL and IGI certified diamonds and James Allen has mostly GIA. The same diamond I have (same GIA#) was offered for $1800 more on Jared’s website.

My fiancé purchased my ring from James Allen and we both couldn’t be happier. I got a platinum band with small diamonds around the band and a gorgeous 1.2 carat round diamond (total carat weight 1.51) for thousands of dollars cheaper than a similar ring we were looking at in a department store (which was also only 1 carat and white gold). I can’t remember the specifics on the two diamonds but the one I got from James Allen was comparable or better in terms of cut, clarity, and colour. They are very responsive to questions and will send you detailed images of multiple diamonds before you buy. Comes with a certificate and price appraisal as well. We got my ring appraised by another jeweller and were given an appraisal almost double the one that came with the ring! We also sent my ring back to get resized with no troubles!
Would really recommend them!
