So they called for snow all along the Southeast - it was supposed to hit my two hometowns (yes, I have two hometowns) last night/this morning with about two inches, so what did they do? Go ahead and call off school. Then, no snow came. None. So all of my friends that are parents that ASSUMED they wouldn't have to go to work because they'd be snowed in (two inches is a big deal down here, y'all, you just don't understand) now have to scramble to find somewhere to take their kids on a perfectly sunny cold day.

My county in Georgia decided yesterday that all of the schools would have early dismissal today, for the same reason. I get that we don't really know how to drive in snow down here, being that we never really have any at all (especially in Atlanta), but couldn't we just WAIT and see what's actually happening outside before making everyone rearrange their lives for a day for no reason at all? When I was little and they called for snow in TN, we actually had to wait until just minutes before we were leaving the house to see if it was cancelled or not - they certainly didn't do it a day before. I know you Northerners laugh at us.... lol!

That being said, dang it all... I really wanted to get snowed in with the hubs and have and extra vacation day. Now where is summer....

Ick. I know. I was really hoping for a snow day too! They predicted 15 inches for Louisville! How much snow is there on the ground...uh maybe two inches. No cancelled school or work. :(

Boo! If it's going to be this cold, it should at least snow! If not, then it needs to just be summer already. :P

We never have cancelled work here... but I also live in Pennsylvania lol.  I go to school in the mountains, they don't even put salt down when it snows, just cinders.  Such a treat to drive in, let me tell you!

I want to move south, and the winter just makes me want to go NOW.

@blushoes - what in the heck are cinders? Sounds scary! Yeah, winter here is usually a cakewalk - but this winter has been awful! Our average high in January is 50, and it's been in the teens, 20's and 30's for about two weeks now! Southerners aren't made to handle this!!!

Cinders are basically just little rocks.  A lot of areas use them instead of salt because salt is so expensive.  They give cars "traction" but they obviously don't melt the ice like salt.  I'm not a fan. lol.

That is VERY cold for the south!  It's 21 here, which is pretty normal.

Layla - I'm hoping the snow hysteria carries on in Jacksonville - I could use a day off of work!  And we're from PA so we could drive if we wanted to.  Keep your fingers crossed EVERYONE out there in WB land. I need a day to do my thank you notes!

I'm watching the news last night and they're closing schools and having early releases the night before? No actual sign of snow?

I'm from MD and they closed schools the morning of, you know, when it was actually snowing.  We would be already half dressed ready to go to school hoping to hear on tv that school is cancelled lol!

My daughter went to bed wishing for snow. I signed up for text messaging with the school system. They usually text around 5 a.m. if there is no school...needless to say, there was no text b/c there was no snow...LOL. I had a very disgruntled 12 year old on my hands this morning....LOL. She looked so cute with her nose all wrinkled up "You mean to tell me I have to go out in sub-zero conditions and there isn't even any SNOW?!!!"....LOL

    @winter - I know! It's nuts!

@melissa - has it ever snowed in Jacksonville? That would be crazy! And hysteria is right. People run out and buy all of the bread, milk and eggs. What the heck are you going to do with that? Make french toast? We went to the store for TWO things last night - Krispy Kreme donuts and beer!

This makes me laugh! I'm from GA, so I totally relate to the snow hysteria. Back when I was in HS, we had a snow day that turned into a beautiful sunny day also. Oh GA, how I love you and your snow dramatics.

Now I live in DC which just got pummeled with its biggest December snowstorm ever. But, where was I? Of course, I was in GA for the holidays. Oh well... at least the pictures were pretty!

    Thats so funny!

We can get 4 feet of snow and the schools won't be closed! I honestly don't remember the last day we had a snow day :-(

I guess they figure we know how to get around in it which we do - but it still sucks!

Enjoy your snow day for whoever has one!

it's funny that so many people are getting so much snow when we haven't seen hardly any here i NYC since our snowstorm (we had a bit of accumulation later, but it all melted fairly quickly). It's just been sunny and cold all week, hovering around 30 degrees as the high. I can't believe how cold it is elsewhere! A friend of mine on a trip to Disney said it's 31 degrees. blech!

@lily- I know!! I grew up in northwest Indiana and we got lake effect snow and stuff and had very few snow days. Mostly only got them the days when it snowed most of the early morning and such before the plows had time to get out or if we didn't have power lol I remember when I was in college in southern Indiana, they got a DUSTING of snow (literally, you could still see the grass) and the kiddos in the local elementary schools had a two hour delay or something (maybe it was even the full day, I don't remember).

It's so interesting to see how southern states handle weather differently than up north! Schools up here don't close unless it's dangerously icy or have blizzard like conditions. I work at a university and we wouldn't close for the day unless we got 3 feet of snow dumped in a few hours...actually they would probably still be open!

Lol, well in Georgia, or anywhere in the South for that matter, any amount of ice or snow is dangerous. I'm dead serious - we don't know how to drive in it!

We did get a snow day here in Nashville--even though there was not one inch of snow!  I'm happy thought because FI and I get to spend the day together now =) (he's a teacher).

Man, I wish 2 inches meant that FI and I could stay home from work!We already have 2-3 inches today and its still coming down. Even a foot or more of snow here in WI just delays things. You're still expected to show up to work, although they're somewhat forgiving if you are late. They will call school off here, at least high school and lower, for real sub zero temps like -15 and below or for excessive snow, a foot or more, but that is very very rare. Snow days are built into the curriculum here.

@katiebug - One of my hometowns is SpringHill, just south of Franklin! All of my friends that have kids there are totally ticked that the kids are out and they still had to go to work, lol! It's about to hit here, I think. I think we really WILL get some snow!

I think the problem is that there are no plows, and definitely no salt.  Apparently they close the bridges down here in Jacksonville at the slight threat of snow, so if you think it's coming, stay on your side of the river, or get a hotel.
