Niagara on the Lake isn’t very low-key but it sure is beautiful! (: I go there every summer and love love love it! I’d want to stay in one of the private vacation homes there: http://www.niagaraonthelake.com/page/properties/Private_Vacation_Homes

For a romantic weekend getaway check out the following:
Niagra Falls or Niagra on the Lake. We stayed at the Marriot downtown NF and it was beautiful.
Ste Annes Spa
Bed and Breakfast
Or even Montreal if you want something a little more lively but might be too far.

You could go up to muskoka. There are probably lots of cottages available to rent because October is off-season. Make sure you get a winterized one though, because it might get pretty cold.

What about Blue Mountain? It is gorgeous all times of the year with lots to do outdoors in the summer and winter and off-seasons. On top of that, they have a spa, great restaurant, etc and it isn’t that far from Newmarket.

I second Muskoka or go a little farther and hit Algonquin. We LOVE it there. As a wedding gift we were given a one nights stay at a bed and breakfast and dinner at a 5star restaurant in Niagara on the Lake and it was nice too. Different atmosphere than Algonquin but still nice. And we did a wine tour (yum).

Oooh I’ve heard nothing but great things about St Annes! There’s also that Scandanavian spa up at Blue Mountain, I’ve heard it’s incredible!

Stratford is a nice quiet place. There are tons of little cottages and cute B&B’s. There’s a nice river, good food and theatre (if you like that sort of thing). However, I’m not sure how far that is from where you live.

The Couples Resort (formerly Bear Trail)
I’ve had a few friends minimoon there. You can rent a cabin, or just a room. It’s in the gorgeous muskoka area and offers lots of possibility for activities plus they have hot tubs and it’s adult only I believe. Very romantic!

@random7890: And you might run into the Biebs 😉 Kidding kidding.
Oh! Killarney Lodge in Algonquin is nice too! It’s very quaint, I was there when I was like 15 and I remember that the food was great 🙂
