That is very sweet of you.
Sorry, I am not much help. The first thing that I think of when I hear the word Idaho is potato :-)
Maybe it is because I love potatoes :-)
Yea, would you believe I've only seen potato farms on tv. I've never seen one in real life haha. North Idaho is much more famous for garnets. I've been thinking about convincing the FI to take a day trip to go garnet finding so I can include a few nice ones in there. I could always include some of the instant "Idaho" potatos lol
I second potato, that's what I think of what I think of Idaho! I like what you've already thought about...what about if you put together your own guide/must do list of things for him to do?
@mrsmurraytobe I'd love to, but I think he'll only be in town for a few days (and I don't trust him driving on icy roads as they shut down his high school because of a little ice on the roads his senior year). I think though that I'll see if he can't come a day early and maybe take him out around the town and do the things on a "must-do" list. That's a good idea!
Hm. Are there any other little novelties or things that represent your local area (like the huckleberry and potato things)? Maybe a tshirt? I would try the little stores that sell random, eclectic souvenirs and things or the little boutiques. They usually have pretty cool unique things.
The only things I can think of that really make our area stand out would be huckleberries (one of the few areas in the country that they grow), garnets, the view, wildlife (not much of that in January), and the only floating golf green in the world, but I can't exactly give him that haha.
@mrsmurraytobe That's a good idea to check out the souvenir shops. Now I just have to find one around here...
Toffee, I think we're going to include Idaho Spud Bars with out OOT bags. Huckleberries were another idea I had for our guests, but I'm not sure what we would include. The huckleberry flavored stuff doesn't do real huckleberries justice, so maybe you & your FI can go huckleberry picking this summer. You could freeze the berries & then use them to make special treats for your guests in January. Maybe huckleberry muffins or something simple like that! (Send me some if you go this route!)
I love the idea @mojito suggests for using huckleberries for muffins or bars or etc! that'd be unique and yummy
@mojito & Sulli301 If I go the baking route I'd rather make a pie. I have an awesome recipe for huckleberry apple pie that my grandfather absolutely loves. I'd thought about making that, but my dad told me that my grandpa probably won't make it until the picking season even, so I'm not sure I'd want to make it for someone else, but we'll see. I've had some really good huckleberry candies here that are made with the real stuff. The spud soap is a good idea (although I've never heard of it before). If I did make the pie, I'd just make a mini pie for him instead of a full-sized one.
So far I'm thinking:
I'm definitely open to suggestions though, so keep 'em comin!
I love the idea of the Idaho Spud Bars! They are delicious :). You know, I've lived in Idaho my entire life and I can't think of anything besides huckleberries that you could include. Well, what pops up in my mind is something from BSU but that's cause I'm in Boise and it's EVERYWHERE. Maybe you could include something from the floating green. And it is really easy to make huckleberry jam, I think that would be nice to include - but I love huckleberry flavored candies. I fail at this, I'm sorry! I will keep thinking :)
Are there any local (cheap) books, brochures or maps on local hikes, bike rides, or other outdoorsy things he'd be interested in? I like the idea of Boise State merch, maybe a water bottle he can carry around w/ his outdoorsy activities, a shirt he can wear, or a cap.

I'm having a friend fly in from St. Louis/St. Charlse, Mo and I want to make an OOT bag for him that's very "Idaho". I'm already thinking about including some huckleberry flavored stuff (popcorn or candy bar most likely) and probably a gift card to eat somewhere for lunch or breakfast if we don't end up just taking him out to eat, but what else should I include? He's very seriously thought about moving here because he's very outdoorsy and would like to live in an area that reflects that. What do you gals (from Idaho or not) think of when you think Idaho?
