Hello everyone! I’m newly engaged and VERY new to the world of wedding planning. I would like to have my ceremony in a religious space and I’m trying to decide between two options.
The one that Fiance and I really like is a chapel on a nearby college campus. The issue is that they don’t have any sort of coordinators, officiants, musicians, etc. that we could use, so we’d have to figure out all of that ourselves.
The other option is going with our church. If we did that, all of the details would be taken care of by the church, but we wouldn’t be able to have the ceremony time we wanted (gap between ceremony and reception). Also, we’d have to do pre-cana classes, which would be difficult because we are living 4 hours apart during our engagement year.
Anyone have opinions on this? Thanks in advance!

Welcome! If you’d really love to have your ceremony at the chapel, I say go for it! It’s not really too much extra work to get the officiant and musicians, and it sounds like it’s what you both really want! You’ll get the venue you want, the time you want, and you can avoid the classes if you don’t want to take them. I think the benefits absolutely outweigh the extra bit of time that will go toward finding an officiant and musicians.

If you want the chapel, go for it! I’m sure you can hire a Day of Coordinator to help, or enlist a reliable friend, and getting the officiant and musicians shouldn’t be too hard. Heck, the school probably has some talented music students you could hire to perform!

@abbie017: Oh, great idea about musicians from the school!

I, personally, say go with the chapel, but if you’re Catholic – be careful. Your church may not recognize your wedding if you don’t have it in a Catholic church and I know couples that have been denied communion because they weren’t married in the church. Some churches are more lax about this than others, but it’s something to talk about with your priest.

Oh, I love the idea about getting musicians from the school! I would assume the school also has a chaplain who may officiate ceremonies sometimes. Am I forgetting anything- is there anyone I’d have to hire other than the officiant and musicians?
