Hi! I don’t have tons of experience traveling outside of the US, but I have been to the Riviera Maya and loved it and convinced my FI to go for our honeymoon! We are staying at the Ocean Coral and Ocean Turquesa all inclusive resort and for a five night stay with airfare, food, airplane and all alcohol it’s around $2100. I have been to the resort before and it is beautiful! Great food, large pools, safe and fun. Also, it’s close too, but not too close to really great attractions.

@moeshawn:  All great options! I went to Punta Cana a couple years ago and stayed at the Dreams resort which was all inclusive. It was a GREAT hotel but I personally didn’t really care for Punta Cana. There was nothing around our resort (which was gated in) and I just didn’t really feel all that safe walking around the beach at night. That said, it really was gorgeous and if you’re looking for a relaxing trip, it’s definitely gorgeous.

Fi and I went to Riviera Maya (Playa del Carmen) last March and LOVED it. There was tons to do at night, you could walk around outside of your resort (wasn’t gated in for security purposes) and I just felt a lot safer. Also the beach was to die for! The sand was white, the water was crystal blue….just gorgeous. They also have a ton of all inclusives to choose from (we stayed at the Riu Palace). Highly, highly suggest Riviera Maya.

My FI and I just booked our honeymoon to Punta Cana! We’re staying at the Excellence resort and are suet excited. We stayed at their sister hotel in Playa Mujeres a few years ago and it was  totally awesome! I’ve had a bunch of friends go to Punta Cana very recently and not of the never felt unsafe so that’s a plus!

Good luck!

I would not choose Cancun personally – too crazy. RM is great and I haven’t been to PC.

I love the Secrets/Dreams/etc group of resorts.  Gorgeous and so luxurious.  I stayed at Dreams Tulum and it was wonderful.  Secrets is great because it’s adults only.

If you stay in Tulum you MUST go to Akamaul Beach and swim with the turtles.  Bring your own snorkel gear and it’s free. So awesome!

@moeshawn:  the beaches suck on the pacific side, IMO. they are NOT the clear turquoise blue that you would see in the carribean. Also, I feel like Cabo (unless you are spending $$$$) is not what it once was.  Punta Cana looks nice, but I’m hesitant based on friends’ experiences with resorts there.  I prefer Mexico, and the Riviera Maya is my pick.  We are headed there again in a week, and I enjoy the beaches, the security I feel at the resorts as well as being relatively close to the US should something happen AND that it is affordable.  good luck!

This summer I went to the Grand Palladium in Riviera Maya. It was all-inclusive. This resort is HUGE with several different hotel lobbies, restaurants, pools, and even has its own adult area. They always had tons of daily and nightly activities and shows and all the staff were so friendly and welcoming. I will definitely be planning another trip to this resort, you can check out their website here: http://www.grandpalladiumrivieramaya.com/

@moeshawn:  Please don’t go to Punta Cana. I worked in the “Customer Service” (read: COMPLAINT) department of a travel agency for 8 years and I swear 60% of our complaints were from there even though we had clients throughout the world. It’s cheap and fun, but the service level is really poor. People just don’t give a crap if something goes wrong… and by goes wrong I mean your bathroom floods, there’s bugs in your bed & the lights don’t work and no one will come up to fix it and they won’t put you in another room.

Cabo or Riveria Maya are awesome choices.

@MexiPino:  Thank you.  I agree 100000%.  My experience was HORRIBLE. 70/150 people on a group trip got food poisoning and I was sick for 2 weeks after returning to the US.  Natives are lazy (sorry!) and I felt very unsafe anywhere outside the resort (guard at gate had a MACHINE GUN when we arrived at night!)
