We stayed at the Excellence Riviera Cancun and I personally think you can probably find a better resort for the money. The main pros for us were the pools (there were several to choose from including a very tranquil lazy-river pool), the service which was very good on the whole (with patchy service at breakfast and lunch; dinner service was always excellent, as was the service at the bars and pools), the atmosphere, which was quiet and sophisticated, and suited us perfectly, and the large choice of restaurants.

The cons for us were the rooms, which I personally think are showing their age, and could do with a refurb, and the food, which IMO ranged from below-average to very good, with most meals average; a lot of food was very over-seasoned, many dishes came with very strong, overpowering sauces, we had undercooked veg on several occasions, etc. It wasn’t bad, but it wasn’t as great as a lot of people make out IMPO.

However, if you’ve not been to a similar resort before, it’s probably a safe bet, and chances are you’ll be blown away. It’s only after being able to compare it to other resorts that I realised there was a fair bit of room for improvement in some areas.

We stayed at Playa Mujeres and it was AMAZING… We would go back in a heartbeat.

Here’s my “review”/recap of my honeymoon (I answered questions afterwards too so check those out)… It was such a nice resort, the drinks were plentiful and the food was delicious.  It was very romantic and relaxing, it was exactly what we were looking for!
