I am completely new to the OPKs and would appreciate some help. We plan to TTC in a few months and I just got off the BCP after being on it for almost 14 years. This is my first cycle off BCP, so I’m trying to figure out my body. I started using OPKs and am wondering how much darker should the second line be. Also, saw some conflicting info on using FMU versus later in the day. What do you ladies use or does it matter?

I test with FMU and a second time after work around 4:30pm. The line has to be as dark or darker then the control line in order to be positive.

@BalticBee: I usually test with early afternoon. I am one of those people who always get a faint line no matter where I am in my cycle so often if I use FMU I get a darker reading for no reason.
As @RoyalLime: said, test line should be as dark or darker 🙂

@BalticBee: yep, just as long as it is AS dark or darker you’re good to go. i tend to test at around 5.30pm when i get home from work. ive noticed that i can still get a positive the day after ovulation with FMU, when my temp is already up and it’s probably too late, so i prefer afternoon.

Thank you for your answers! I had one test that looked like maybe the lines were both same darkness, but wasn’t completely sure. Real AF came today so I’ll see how the tests go this month. Yay for inexpensive OPKs! 🙂
