I would, depending on what kind of shoes I would wear. If you are wearing flats or 1" heels, I might just say "forget it". If I was not sure on my shoes or wearing heels of 2-4", I would def get the extra fabric. It sucks to have it cut off, but you would likely get a more polished look by shortening, rather than elongating, the fabric.
Hmm. Yeah, FI is 6', and I have no plans to tower over him, plus I'm not much for heels at any time. The thing is, it's not a skirt that can really be reasonably added to or dropped in any way, so having it start too short worries me.
@TankGirl: I would order extra length. And I would pick your shoes before you order, so that you can have a pro measure you with shoes on. If you decide to add crinoline it can shorten the dress a couple inches. I'm not sure if thats something you would need though (hard to tell without a picture/idea of the shape)
If you're at all worried it'll be too short, add an inch or two. It would be worse to me to have a too short issue than a too long issue. And trust me on this - I did the same thing! haha. I'm 5'10. The sample didn't even touch the floor, so they measured and ordered 3 inches to be added. Well they screwed up and added 4. So now I'm just adding some extra tulle to my undergarments to keep it off the floor. :)But it's a poofier dress, so a little extra poof isn't going to hurt anything.
I had thought about wearing higher heels and yeah....not going to happen. I hate heels, they are lucky I bought 2" ones! Plus I broke my toe this morning and the wedding is in 3 weeks. You never know what is going to happen!
@asscherlover: Good points, but I kind of need to order it sooner than later, and I'm more likely to remove crinoline than add it. It's this dress, and I prefer it with less volume, but as y can see, the hem isn't complicated.
I'd get the extra three if it's not more money than an extra one. But get the extra. You didn't mention if you're planning on a crinoline or not, but if you are, that will take a couple inches off the dress. My dress was too long to begin with, and I figured I was going to have to chop off 2-3 inches after trying the sample with 6 inch heels. But with my crinoline in my 4.5 inch wedding shoes, it's the absolute perfect length- if it were any shorter I'd have had to return my beautiful shoes!
@AmeliaBedelia: Yeah, that's been my instinct so far. What surprises me is that most samples I've tried would be ok with flats, I guess every person is a little differently proportioned. Your poor toe, that sucks! Here's to low and no-heeled shoes!
I'd order the extra length.
I'm 5'7, wasn't given the option to order extra length and at my first fitting (in no shoes) it was too short. I wasn't going to wear a huge heel, but it was immediately not an option. I had to wear flats.
I would hate to be limited by not getting the extra length. You never know, you might happen to find an awesome pair of shoes that have a slight heel.
@thursdayschild: Wow, that's crazy that they didn't even mention ordering extra length! I'm open to a little bit of heel, or none, but I definitely don't want to be wishing it hit the ground while barefoot, which could happen.

Ok, the conundrum is this. I can't try on the dress I want to order, which I'm ok with (done my research, like all the elements of it on other dresses, just can't try the particular one on). The designer's recommendation is that if you're over 5'9", you need extra length. I'm 5'10". BUT... even in an inch of wedge (which is the most I might wear), my hollow to hem measurement is 60", same as the dress's standard length. I've been told that I'm long through the shoulders, so maybe that's why.
Luckily, the hem is pretty simple and it's only $60 to get extra put on. Some part of me just balks at the idea of paying that for an inch of fabric and then maybe having to pay to have it taken back off.
