So, who has done this? I ordered a size down for my wedding dress. I knew I would be able to drop the weight, now I’m worried that they won’t be able to take it in enough without compromising the design. I have already dropped below the size I ordered. If I stay on track (and I’m 100% sure I will) when my dress comes in July I will be at least another 2 sizes down. I am plus sized–street size 10 in pants right now but my bust is large (varies between 14-18 tops, and right now I’m a 40DD) so that pushed me way into plus territory in wedding dresses.
I found out last night that when I ordered it in January the shop owner pulled my daughter (23) aside and said, “oh I don’t think ordering a smaller size is a good idea, are you sure your mom will lose the weight?” My daughter just cracked up and said, “oh boy, don’t worry–you don’t know my mom, she will!”.
Has anyone altered a dress down several sizes? How did it go? I guess worst case I would have to buy another dress but I love love LOVE my gown so I hope not! And it is too late to change the size. Opinions?
this is the dress, for reference–zipper back.

Congrats on the weight loss! I am in a similar situation except I didn’t order the smaller size and should have (I’ve dropped 2 dress sizes and the dress was already 1-2 sizes too big). I called the dress shop today and talked to the alterations department and they said they can take in pretty much any dress up to 4 sizes with no issue. If it needs to be taken in more than that, they may need to look into it further. So, I don’t think it’ll be a problem for you. If it’ll make you feel better, go try the dress on and talk to your seamstress about it. Talking to them today eased my mind.

I was told they could normally take in a dress 4 sizes without having to make any serious alterations to the structure of the gown. Mine is at least 2 sizes too big so I hope they are right!

Honey, a good alterations lady can take ANYTHING in without compromising the design. It’s amazing. I had a friend get a sample size 12 and take it down to a 2. Looked great.

Congratulations on your weight loss! I would try not to worry now as there’s nothing you can do. When you try it on and find out exactly how much it needs to go in, the alterations lady will be there to help you!
