We are using excel. Its by far the easiest way. It is well worth your time to learn excel, even if you only use it for this purpose.
If you're planning on doing the mail merge tool, you could either put them in excel or outlook. I found excelt the easiest, but if you don't mind filling in all those business cards in outlook, that's easy too.
Do you have a huge guest list? There are ways to insert addresses on labels in word, but have you thought about handwriting the envelopes if the number of envelopes isn't insane? Not only would it be easier, but Emily Post would approve.
ok, so go to weddingwire.com or some other site (brides.com, theknot, etc) and use their guest list tool. Get everyones addresses in there. Once they are all in there, you can export the guest list into an Excel Format (of you need help with that, PM me) and its all right in front of you. After that, you can copy and paste onto an envelope template (for my various projects, I size down a blank Word Document into envelope size. 5x7 in my case) so that way, you see what it will look like on screen. :)
I agree that having them in Excel makes it very easy to search, sort, etc. I'd go to weddingwire.com and check out what format their guest list manager wants-- if it's one column for first name, one for last, etc.-- and keep yours in that format, so that you can use the seating tools a little later on in the process. They were very helpful for me!
It's also helpful to have in Excel as you can continue to add information, like for gifts received, thank you notes sent, hotel arrangements, etc.
also with weddingwire - their Guest Seating application is by far the best one I tried. Its a great tool
We're looking at a pretty large list - 200-250 and my handwriting looks like a 3rd grade boy's so... that's out of the question! lol.
I'll go check out wedding wire. Thanks for all the help, keep up the suggestions!
I had this problem (and we've only got 131 people on our guest list so far!) until I stumbled across this website:
http://weddings.shanbritedesigns.com/templates.htm
Scroll down to Guests and both "guest list worksheet" and "guest list spreadsheet" are useful for dealing with guests lists (or so I have found). Plus, that site has a bunch of other super awesome things I've found useful! Explore it a little! :)
Good luck!
I know I am planning on doing something like Ms. Fondue and Mrs. Cowboy Boot using a google form.

Wow, that google form feature is amazing! Looks like I'll be spending some time checking out google docs - never thought it was really anything. Oops!
We are using a combo of Excel and Google Docs.
There are several wedding websites that can help organize too like weddingtracker and weddingwire
We got our spreadsheet from theplunge.com -- it's great.

OK, don't know if there's another thread already, but being in the first stages, I know I gotta wrangle the guest list!
As we finalize the list and get everything together, what have you found to be the best way to format a list? I plan on doing my own STD's and Invitations... so I know I'll need to print addresses on PostCards and Envelopes.
I'm not the best at Excel and what not so I'm not sure if there's a trick to how I should organize all my addresses to make printing easier, or a method that works well. I've also never printed to envelopes before so... what to do!
