I've used tissue paper before! It's a real pain to do all the cutting, but it gives the same results.
I thought ordering in bulk online would be cheaper, but actually, Michael's with a 40-50% off coupon was the cheapest! I got nearly 1600 sheets of colorful origami paper for $15, enough to make 1000 cranes and some extra flowers. They have multi-colored packs, pastels, etc in all sizes from 25 sheets to 300!

For all you brides out there who have or are planning to do some sort of origami inspired elements in your wedding (whether it be cranes, flowers, or anything else one can fold), what kind of paper did you use and where did you find it? I'm having a hard time finding just a paper store around my area, and with amazon it's mostly multi-colored/sized paper packs when I have a specific size and color in mind. Can anyone help me out? Thanks!
