Have you considered a blouse and skirt? Just tossing that out there.
And I think you can wear whatever you want.
As long as it's not super formal I think you're okay to wear pants.
If you really want something special you could try a colored pant.
Khakis seem like work wear to me, but I've seen some people do them stylishly.

Nice apnts with heels or cool boots are definitely more formal.

If you want to try a skirt or dress, I'd go for something soft and a bit loose. Like a jersey knit and wear a close fitting top with a cardigan or scarf.

I definitely need to get on finding a dress (or dresses) for the "other" occasions (shower, rehearsal, belated reception...), but I can't find anything that I like. I haven't worn a dress since 2006, so dresses aren't really my style and my fiance isn't a big fan of them either... Could I get away with a nice shirt and khakis?
Requirements if it's a dress:
- knee-length-ish (just not mini; not comfortable with something that short)
- flattering but not body hugging
(I really like the dress Taylor Swift wears when she's in the woods with the pictures in the Mine video...)
Requirements for either dress or shirt:
- not dark in colour
- not long sleeved or strapless
- little or no lace
- absolutely no animal prints (I'm not typically too big on florals either)
- not too low cut
- not empire-waist
Any suggestions (brands/stores or specific items)? What do you think about dress vs shirt?
