Congratulations on your engagement and upcoming wedding!  I am from Ottawa and am also looking for a smaller sized wedding venue (50-60 guests), with a max total bugdet of $9000.  Would be very interested to hear any recommendations for unique and smaller sized venues (ideally with reception and ceremony in the same place or at least close by).

Any Ottawa bees have advice?  Thanks!

I made an account just to reply to you both – I’m in Ottawa and having a smaller wedding too. Congratulations, first of all!

We’re having our wedding at Table 40 on Springfield Rd., which is owned by Fraser Cafe. We’ve eaten at both many times and can vouch for the food and service, and so far, our interaction with their event coordinator has been very positive. They can accommodate 45 for a seated meal, and could do a bit larger if it’s not a seated meal (best to talk to them about the options). Their minimum spend is only $1500 (or $1750, I can’t remember – for us, I know we’ll reach the higher number for sure). They can do the ceremony on-site as well, but I’d talk to them about the options to see how/if it fits in with your vision. Here’s a bit more info: http://frasercafe.ca/table40/about-table40/ (contact info can be found under “book an event” in the menu on the left).

mrsgarkenzie, another suggestion for you would be the Keg Manor on Richmond Road (https://www.kegsteakhouse.com/en/locations/ON/ottawa/keg-manor/). We asked there as well, and they can accommodate up to 40 people. Unfortunately I don’t have much more information (we never seriously pursued it, it’s a bit too small for us). We’ve eaten there twice, once on the patio (it backs onto a lovely garden/green space, which would probably be great in August!), once indoors (also very nice). I don’t know how familiar you are with Ottawa, but despite being in the middle of town it’s got a very nice, secluded feel to it and there are some nice gardens on the grounds for photography. You can even have your wedding ceremony in the garden (http://www.maplelawn.ca/FAQ.html). Here’s a bit more about the property: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maplelawn.

For both of you, I would also suggest looking into Fresco on Elgin St. (http://frescobistro.ca/GroupEvents/tabid/106585/Default.aspx) – have eaten there once and it was very good (though it was a long time ago). We looked at their space but decided against it for reasons of convenience. Can’t recall what their minimum spend was – that may have also played a role. Another suggestion would be Vittoria Trattoria in the Market (I’ve eaten there a few times and really enjoyed it, and the stone walls give it a great ambiance) – here’s some info on their capacity http://www.vittoriatrattoria.com/locations/byward-market.aspx, although I don’t know anything about their event prices, sorry. The Courtyard restaurant in the Market is known for doing weddings – I’ve never been, but if you like old stone buildings, worth a look. Their website seems to be down right now though…

You’re both too kind – I’m glad to be of help if I can! I know how hard finding a great venue can be!

mrsgarkenzie:  Amazing! Great minds think alike and all that 😉 Menu is a bit of a tricky topic for us – we might not have low enough numbers to do the sit-down meal. (We’re looking at 54 people, including us, if everyone says yes, so we might have to go the canapes & charcuterie route.) If we’re able to do a meal, it’ll probably be at or very close to the 45-person maximum, so for the sake of our budget, I think we’d end up going with the 3 course meal. The four course sample menu they sent us sounds delicious though! That’s a tough decision!

Chantallio:  I’m so glad I was able to suggest ones you haven’t already checked out! Table 40 is awesome, I could go on and on about their food – so good. They told us they could accommodate 60 for canapes/charcuterie – I realized I mentioned the sit-down max but not the capacity for a cocktail reception, sorry. Good luck with narrowing down the options, I hope ultimately this helps you settle on a venue! 🙂

mrsgarkenzie:  I don’t blame you at all – two thirds of our guests are from out of town, so not having a full meal crossed my mind as being risky as well. We’re hoping if we can manage expectations, people won’t be disappointed – we wouldn’t want someone to come expecting dinner and get just canapés, so we’d make that clear and make sure we do it between meal times if that’s the route we go. The portions are a good size. Did they tell you whether the meal is plated or served family style (they do family style dinners on Mondays at Table 40)? I can ask them on Friday when we go to talk setup/decor and report back, if not. That might make a difference in terms of portion size – hungrier guests could always have more if it’s family style.

We haven’t talked alcohol with them yet, although I do have a drink menu. We were hoping to do a completely open bar, but if we do a sit-down dinner we might have to be a bit more strategic and pay for the wine and beer only (and sparkling wine/champagne toast, if we do that). We have some Scotch loving guests so that could get pricey quickly! 😉 I guess it would depend on a few things, including the price of the wines that we pick. Not an easy decision!

Saw this on the front page. I got married in Ottawa at Sidedoor. I had 68 People (including my planner and two photographers) If anyone is still looking, and is interested hit me up for details. It was amazing, and I would reccommend it very highly! We were married there the first year they started hosting weddings, and they hit it out of the park!
