I decided to wax my own upper lip. What possessed me? Maybe I didn’t do it right, but I ended up with a swollen lip and a bright red strip across the top of my mouth that’s been there, oh, 15 minutes. And it’s on fire.
Mind you, I’m no stranger to waxing. (I have would have eyebrows like a caveman without waxing or plucking…) I’ve just never done it myself. There’s a first time for everything, though…and a last!
(Sure, I ended up with a smooth lip, but was it worth it? I took some ibuprofen and caked some vaseline on that sucker, but let’s hope it doesn’t look like this when I go to work tomorrow.)
How many of you torture yourselves like this?! Anybody else got horror stories from at-home beauty rituals? I can’t be the only one.

Ummm not for me, but once DH asked me to wax his back. NOT a good idea.

Attempted to wax my upper lip years ago, ended up tearing the skin off. Took weeks before it looked normal again!
I hope your lip goes down!

@ahigg396: What did you use? I’ve used the Sally Hansen wax strips…. They don’t require heating up. They worked great for me….. I use them from time to time with no issues. The kit I have comes with little strips in different sizes and also this gel you apply afterwards to soothe it. Hopefully yours clears up by tomorrow!

@weddingbound: Thanks so much! I bought a Sally Hansen kit, but without the strips. It was just the hard wax. I’m just being a big weenie about it…but it’s going in the trash. lol If there’s a next time, I’ll try what you use! I think I just need someone else to pull it off for me.

There’s not really details… I’d waxed my own legs a fair bit with no issues. Used the same strips and everything on DH, but when I pulled off, a few of the follicles were bleeding, and then he got a terrible bumpy rash that took a couple weeks to go away. He was so mad at me.

@ahigg396: i’ve been waxing my own lip for years. i use the cold wax strips. they work well. even after all of these years, my lip still swells a bit and turns red. i do it at night before bed so that the swelling/redness goes down overnight.
one tip is to make sure that after you pull it off, put your other hand on the area right away. waxing is shocking to the skin so when you put your hand on it, it calms it down a bit.

I wax my own lip, eyebrows, and have even done my own bikini wax. I’ve been doing it for years. I think the wax was probably too hot. Do you have blonde or red hair? Your skin would be more sensitive that way. They have special wax for that, it’s typically a pink creamy color. I’ve never tried the cold wax but I my hair is too course for that.
