I thought it would take much longer for me to spread this news on the Bee, but my countdown was cut off this weekend when my SO of nearly 6 years became MY FI!
Although I had known a proposal was in the works, he managed to catch me completely off guard. I had no idea what I was walking into and he was SO CALM. (Turns out he wasn’t, but I guess I missed the signs.) I wasn’t expecting anything for another month or two.
Yesterday began as a normal Sunday. We laid around watching TV like we normally do and went to lunch. In retrospect, he barely touched his food and wasn’t making much conversation, but I just thought he was tired/not feeling great.
After lunch, he said he wanted to stop by one of the nearby golf courses to pick up a gift certificate for his Dad’s birthday. Since getting a gift certificate was MY idea, I thought nothing of it. We drove, he tapped on the steering wheel in a neurotic kind of way, (pretty normal for him) and he parked. I stayed in the car. I actually started to think….”Are we even at a golf course? This place looks familiar…” I talked myself down, saying I shouldn’t keep getting my hopes up.
A few minutes later my phone rang.
Him: “I need you to come meet me. I have a question.”
Me: “Okay…where are you?”
“You’ll see me.”
“Do I need my purse?”
“No, would you just come here?”
So I walked down the sidewalk. My heart starts pounding. I realize that I’m in the park where we had our 2nd date; where we’d watched another couple become engaged and thought, Is this fate?!
Longest walk of my life. And then I could see him, standing under the gazebo on the river where we’d witnessed that moment so long ago. He was beaming. Leading to him was an aisle-like bridge, covered with scattered flowers. The railing and gazebo itself was decorated with white daisies and tulips–my favorite flowers.
I practically SKIPPED down the thing and into his arms. I kissed him like crazy and he started talking. “You are so sweet. You are so beautiful. You are the strongest person I know. I can’t spend another minute without knowing you’ll be my wife.”
His nose turned red, his eyes got glossy, and the man I never thought would cry managed to choke out: “Will you marry me?”
My response was kissing. I thought I would have it all planned out, but it went out the window. Eventually there was an, “Is that a yes?” “YES!” People that had stopped walking their dogs and fishing to watch us began to clap.
He pointed out his brother, standing behind a tree with a video camera. My best friend ran in from around the corner. It. was. perfect.
Here are some pictures, with a video that will be on the way!
